Alexander Sloan was born to the late William and Odella McLeod Sloan on October 22nd, 1934 in Marlboro County, South Carolina. Alexander was the oldest of three siblings, Christine Sloan Bryant (deceased) and Bernice Sloan Ferguson. At an early age, the family moved to Charlotte, NC so his father could find a better job. The family lived in the First Ward area of Charlotte. Alexander attended Alexander Street School, followed by Fairview School and then West Charlotte High School.
Alexander was a dedicated Boy Scout who earned many badges and awards. As a teenager, Alexander worked for Reliable Food Store owned by Mr. Z.B. Watson. He delivered groceries on a bicycle. Alexander often bought his two sisters (Bernice and Christine) apples home to eat. As a young adult, Alexander worked for Charley Fine Cleaners as a store clerk. His sister Bernice would ask him, “Why are you always working?”. He replied with, “I like the sound of money in my pocket”.
Alexander graduated from West Charlotte High School in 1953. Later as an adult, he worked for Durwood Medical Clinic, as the supervisor of ground and maintenance until retirement. Throughout his adult life, he was nicknamed ‘Big Al’. Alexander met and married a beautiful twenty one year old, Myrtle Lee Hamlin, on August 25th, 1963. He was lovestruck and happy with their strong bond. Later God blessed them with two children. The son he always wanted, Shawn Alexander Sloan, and the apple of his eye, Alicia (Lisa) Parker Matthews.
He was blessed with one grand-daughter, Faith Aliciá Parker born on January 5th, 2000. As a toddler, Faith loved to surprise her grandpa by painting his fingernails and toenails while he was sleeping. She would also put barrettes in his hair, with her baby dolls comb and brush set. Alexander would smile with pride when others asked, who did this? God blessed Alexander to have a life full of humor and love.
At an early age, Alexander was involved with the life of the church at Saint Paul Baptist Church. His father served as a deacon, and his mom a deaconess. Because of some discord, Alexander and his family found God’s peace at Prince Of Peace Lutheran Church. At Prince Of Peace Lutheran Church, Alexander served as an Elder, Boy Scouts Leader, Finance Committee Personnel, and sang in the Men’s Choir.
Even Parkinson’s Disease couldn’t take away the joy of life God had given him. Alexander accepted God’s call on Saturday, July 27th, 2024 at Charlotte Health and Rehabilitation Center. Alexander is survived by his wife of 60 years, Myrtle Hamlin Sloan, son Shawn Sloan, daughter Alicia Parker- Matthews, grand-daughter Faith Aliciá Parker, and a blue- nosed pit bull terrier, Skilar. Alexander also leaves to mourn his last sibling Bernice Sloan Ferguson of Charlotte. Also sister in laws, brother in laws, a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.
