John 16:22 - And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
Alice M. Butler Tillman, 93, was born on May 19, 1922. She was born to Alberta B. Barber and the adopted daughter of Albert & Delia Butler. She passed away on December 29, 2015. She grew up in Fairfield County and there she attended Biddle School. She married David M. Tillman her childhood sweet heart and from this union there were nine children.
Alice sang in the church choir and taught Sunday school. She was a loving and caring wife. She always made time for her family. Early on, her summers were busy from entertaining extended family from out of town and scheduling grandchildren’s annual two week stays, sometimes a little less to make room for them all. Teaching the grandchildren how to cook, bake, garden, and fish. One of her favorite pass times was watching her game shows. Time passed she looked forward to her visits from family bringing by their dates and friends to meet her. She would welcome them into her home, maybe offer them some dinner, slice of pound cake or sweet potato pie. Always had a good since of humor, laughing joking, maybe tell a story or two about when the children and/or grandchildren were growing up. On some visits sometimes showing them the many pictures that family members sent to her to collect in her picture album to hold some of the many Tillman family memories. Alice was a devoted mother, wonderful grandmother and great grandmother and will dearly and truly be missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband David Tillman Sr., two daughters, Gladys & Roberta Tillman, two sons, David & Dennis Tillman and siblings, Rosa Moore, Geneva Barber, Elvira Peters, Nina Tuset, Gussie Barber, Gertrude Kennedy, Inez B. Tidwell Hall, Claretta May and Mattie Barber, Clytie Dickerson, Richard Simpson, William and Edward Barber.
Alice leaves to mourn her passing: one son, James (Lillian) Tillman; four daughters, Naomi T. Parks, Hertisene T. Stewart and Patricia T. (Nathaniel) Paulings all of Charlotte, North Carolina and Glenda T. (Larry) McKissick of San Diego, California; sister, Lula Bell White of Lutz, Florida; seventeen grandchildren, thirty-two great grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
“The Broken Chain”
We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly; in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.
