He transitioned from labor to reward on Friday, March 26, 2021, at home. Alonzo attended Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools attending Plato Price and graduating from York Road High School in 1962. He was a former employee of Metro Metal and Terrell Machine Company as a Machine Shop Supervisor. In his youth, Alonzo loved sports. He played basketball in High School, giving him the name “Pistol Pete” for his jump shot, and he ran track. Alonzo went on to receive a basketball and track scholarship to NC Central University. He also played in the Industrial League for Terrell Machine Company. When you think of Alonzo, “wiz” would come to mind. He was great at math and tutored so many at the grade school, high school, and college levels. So many are thankful that his aptitude and patience helped them pass their math classes. Alonzo also played the coronet in the high school band. Alonzo loved to dress and was voted the best-dressed male in his senior year of high school. He never changed from being neat and ensuring he was always classy and stylish. Alonzo had a stroke in early 1992 and while he was rendered with paralysis on his right side, his faith in God and determination to succeed only increased. He went from being unable to talk, process, or walk to being a true asset to all that knew him. Alonzo joined the Dowd YMCA after his stroke and faithfully attended each week to gain and maintain strength with swimming and other activities. Alonzo was a proud member of the Johnson C. Smith 100 Club, proudly wearing his gold blazer, and the Par-Busters Golf Group, proudly wearing his green blazer for many years. Alonzo’s commitment to God and ministry was evident to all those who knew him. He was known by family and friends to always share with those in need and provide help whenever possible. Alonzo was a dedicated member of the St. Paul Baptist Church for over 50 years where he served in numerous capacities until his health could no longer afford him the opportunity to serve. He was nominated in 2006 by Alan Thomas and ordained a Deacon on October 8, 2006, where he served faithfully on the Tribe of Judah One. Alonzo was a dedicated member of the Samson Ministry where he made calls, sent cards of encouragement, and visited the sick. He always felt it was his Christian duty to care for his fellow brothers and sisters. He did not allow anything to come in the way of his service to God and his church family. Alonzo served on the ushers ministry, male chorus, Men’s Fellowship, and Men’s Day Golf Planning Committee. Alonzo leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 16 years, Karen Stewart Pettis; one sister, Gracie Pettis Hargro; two brothers-in-law, James Black, Donnell Mickens; a blended family of five daughters, Regina Owens, Jevonda Faust, A’Lice Powell, Nikki, Leah Stewart; two sons, Jeffrey (Jessica), Terrence Stewart (Luciana); fourteen grandchildren, Juanita Faust, Ele’shia Walker (William), Thomas Owens, Jr., Christopher Reid, Aaliyah Hayes, Sean Brown, Cierra (Marcus), Max, Robert, Zion, Jurnei, Samson, Phoenix, Emerson; three great-grandchildren, Zahrya Walker, Karleigh, Marcus, Jr.; four nieces, Donna Hubbard (Damon), Vonetta Mickens, Beverly Steele, Courtney Austin (Antwan); three nephews, Donald Hargro, Jr, Travluss Mickens (JoAnna), George Blackmon; special daughter, Beverly Moss (Andre); special sons, Ronnie Gaddy, Darryl Gaddy, Thomas Owens, Sr.; special cousins, Lorraine Leach, John Latham, Tasha Leach, DeeDee Gaddy, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends to celebrate his love of life and legacy.
