Annie Mae Ivey McPherson, “Nana” to her family and “Ms. Mac” to friends and neighbors, was born on October 30, 1925 in Winston-Salem, NC. She was the daughter of Walker Ivey and Geneva Hill.
She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, Lewis and Jimmy Ivey, and one sister, Dorothy Virginia Hicks.
Ms. Ann graduated from Second Ward High School, Charlotte, NC. She also earned an Associates Degree in General Education at Laney College in Alameda, CA.
Annie was adventurous so after High School graduation she set off on her journey to visit family and friends in Virginia, New York and finally California.
“Nana” was taught early in life to be self-sufficient. She learned to plant and tend a garden, sew and tailor clothes. She was an excellent homemaker and her cooking was second to none.
Widowed at an early age, she raised her children as a single parent, instilling in them valuable life lessons, family values, respect for others and the love of God.
She worked for several companies where she learned multiple business skills allowing her to start her own business which was named “Sports and Stuff” located on Beatties Ford Rd. adjacent to Johnson C. Smith University. She also worked for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System as a substitute teacher.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving, caring children: one daughter, Anita Spriggs-Hill of Charlotte, NC, and three sons, Gregory Spriggs (Donna) of Oakland, CA, Reginald McPherson of Hawaii and Terry McPherson (Charlotte) of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Gina Spriggs, Maurice K. Hill, III, Simone Spriggs, Siara Spriggs, Kali McPherson-Chisholm (Freddie), Bikos McPherson and Ashley McPherson; great-grandchildren, Jeremy Givens and Carson Hill; one sister, Almetta Ivey of Charlotte, NC; one brother, Edward Ivey of Brooklyn, NY; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Special thanks to Charles Armond, Ashley Smith and Wanda Middleton.
