Bessie Lee Cannon

Bessie Lee Polen Cannon was born on July 25, 1943, and departed this life on Wednesday
September 13, 2023.

She was born to the late John and Sarah Polen. She was the youngest of five children. She was a
member of Gethsemane Baptist Church in Avery, GA. She graduated from Wrens High School
in Wrens, GA. After High School she moved to Brooklyn New York and later joined Greater
File Chapel Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Jasper Simmons. In her
younger years she worked as a Nursing Assistant at various nursing facilities, her favorite being
Dekalb Nursing home in Brooklyn, NY. She later met the love of her life William Bill Cannon,
and soon after they were married. To their union they had one son Duane Cannon. Later the
family would move to Charlotte, NC and join Rocky Ridge Baptist Church under the leadership
of the late Rev. Dr. E. R. Kirkpatrick. She retired as a Nursing Assistant and started work as a
Bus Driver for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools until she retired. Bessie loved her garden, and
fellowshipping with her senior group.

She was predeceased by her husband William Bill Cannon, brothers Charlie Polen and Hilton
Polen, grandson Ethan Duane Cannon.

Left to cherish her memories are her son Duane Cannon and his companion (Morgan) of Indian
Trail, NC, sisters Shirley Jones of Brooklyn, NY, Mattie Bell Blair of Wrens, GA, Esther Mae
Polen of Augusta, GA. One brother James Hatchet of Atlanta, GA and a host of nieces, nephews,
God-children and friends.
