Consuelo D. Hill, 72, native of Plainfield NJ and current resident of Charlotte, NC passed on
the morning of July 23rd, 2024. She graduated from Virginia State University, and relocated
to Newburgh, NY. She taught music for 38 years for Newburgh Enlarged City School District,
was a professional singer and song writer, an actress, a community leader, activist, a loving
mother, sister, and aunt. From NBA Conference Championships singing the national
anthem, singing for government officials, semi pro baseball games, debutant balls, NFA
Step Squad, vocal lessons for countless singers, conducting choirs, composing scores for
plays, and being a minister of music, Consuelo new how to entertain, teach and inspire.
Connie, as she was affectionately called, was known for many talents and her phenomenal
unforgettable voice. She was a true song bird who toured Europe with the Concordia Youth
Corale, ’68, had leading roles on national Broadway tours, was a Professor of Music at
SUNY New Paltz as well as pioneered their Black Studies Dept. She taught award winning
choirs and won gospel competitions of all ages; most notably The Multicultural Choir of
Temple Hill Academy. Consuelo’s most memorable performance was at the legendary
Cotton Club. Consuelo was a member of the prestigious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
She raised 3 children with Donnell L. Hill Sr, whom all she leaves behind Donnell L. Hill Jr,
Brenton A. Hill, and Leandrea J. Hill. She also leaves behind a beautiful daughter in law Ana
Marie, four grandchildren Jeremiah, Emma, Elijah & Noah, her sister Kim Peterson, and her
brother Terrance Peterson. Consuelo lovingly leaves behind her fiancé and confidant
Ernest Fryar. Connie was predeceased by her mother Marion C. Peterson, her father Walter
Peterson, brother Walter Peterson, and loving nephew Terrance Harris. She touched the
lives of thousands of people over the past 72 years many who’ve gone on to be their own
inspirations. She always celebrated her “babies”. Mz. Chill, as her students called her, was
a beautiful angel on earth and a true icon to those who knew and loved her. She will be
deeply missed.
