Obituary

Attorney Deborah Ann Nance was born in Charlotte, North Carolina to her loving mother, Christine Long Nance, on September 24, 1959.  Although Deborah was an only child, she was raised alongside her cousins, Diane Mayhew, Steve, and Michael McMickens.    They, along with their other cousins and visiting relatives, spent a great deal of time together at their grandparents’ along home. She gave her life to Christ at an early age and was baptized at the family’s home church, Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church where she served until her health failed. Although Deborah was a very private person, she was raised in a caring, loving, and Christian environment, it resonated throughout her life and career as she loved helping people.

Attorney Nance attended Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, graduating from Garinger Senior High School in 1977.  She earned a BA Degree from North Carolina Central University in 1981 and a Juris Doctorate Degree from The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 1984.    Deborah served as an intern with the US International Communication Agency and held two internships with the US Department of State in Washington, DC.   She was the first African American female officer for the Mecklenburg County Bar where she served as Secretary.  She also served on several of the bar’s committees: the fee arbitration committee, the library committee, and the history committee as well as serving on the Habitat for Humanity committee.   Deborah worked with Legal Services of Southern Piedmont, Inc., a nonprofit law firm where she handled housing, domestic, employment and consumer cases in Mecklenburg and Gaston Counties.

Deborah had a strong love for family history and genealogy.   She meticulously researched and published the first Nance - Brown Family Tree.   Deborah joins her heavenly family:  mother, Christine Long Nance; grandparents: George and Hattie Brown Nance; aunts, Mary Mayhew, Emma Coker, Frances McKee; uncles, George Otis Nance, Charles Samuel Nance, John Frank McKee, and Joseph Caldwell, Sr.; first cousins:  Hattie George, Anita Mayhew, Diane Mayhew, Quincey Mayhew, Charlene Mayhew, and Steve McMickens.

She leaves to cherish her memories:  Her last surviving aunt, Maggie Caldwell of Mount Vernon, NY; eleven first cousins:  Shelia Baxter-Cahill of New Rochelle, NY;  Virginia Mayhew of Mount Vernon, NY; Gwenell McGruder of Laurel, Maryland; Beverly McCain of Charlotte, NC;  Joseph Caldwell, Jr. of Mount Vernon, NY;  Bernard Mayhew of New York, NY; Michael Mayhew of New York; David Mayhew of Charlotte, NC;  Donald Nance (Geraldine) of Charlotte, NC ; Darryl Nance of Charlotte, NC; Michael McMickens  (ElFreda) of  Savannah , GA and a host of other loving cousins and friends.
