Celebrating the life of DeMarco Cathcart

On Saturday, July 22, 2023, God called home a humble and loving young man.

DeMarco Jauan Cathcart was born on April 12, 1996, in Charlotte, NC. He shared a very strong loving bond with his baby sister Alexis Cathcart.

DeMarco attended Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and was a 2014 graduate of West Mecklenburg High School. While attending West Mecklenburg, DeMarco was a dedicated band member. He took pride in playing the bass drum. After graduating from high school, DeMarco worked at Carowinds, Walmart, Best Buy and Pitney Bowes. He initially planned to join the US Air Force, but had a change of heart and decided to further his education. He would later attend Central Piedmont Community College, where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration, a Certification in Business Management and a Certification in Business Operations in 2020.

DeMarco continued his education with his mindset in attending a HBCU, and enrolled in North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in 2021. While attending NC A&T, DeMarco was on the Dean’s and Chancellor’s lists. He was a Senior, set to graduate in December of 2023 as a candidate for the Bachelor’s of Science in Management, with a concentration in Business Administration. He was looking forward to having this additional accolade and, most importantly, being an Aggie alum just as his baby sister Alexis. He took pride in being enrolled in the university.

DeMarco’s dream after graduation was to work in the financial industry, to gain more knowledge of the business aspect. He ultimately wanted to own his own business, always having pride in being a young entrepreneur. He admired the motivation of his auntie Jennifer, who opened her own medical clinic; he realized if you dream it and have faith, it can happen. He always spoke of how proud he was of her accomplishment and wanted to do the same.

DeMarco attended Greater Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC.

DeMarco was a very musically talented young man, known by many as Marco, D-Money, Lil TeeCee, Lil Topcat, and Cool and the Fam.

He was affectionately known by his closest friends as Marc Beats. The nickname was given as he would passionately provide instrumental beats for various people to further compose into their songs. His dream was to later have his own music studio and to be a music producer in the Charlotte metro area, to help up and coming artists, especially minorities. DeMarco always felt music was a way to express/soothe all pain. As a family, we could always tell when he was in deep thought, as he would be in a zone with creating various instrumental selections, in his room with a closed door.

He had dreams of being a music producer, like Leland Wayne aka Metro Boomin, who is a talented American record producer based out of Atlanta, GA. Metro Boomin was his inspiration and he dreamed of meeting the producer one day.

DeMarco’s hobbies included spending time with his family, as he always said that “family is first.” He also enjoyed playing the keyboard by ear, composing music, and being an avid NASCAR and football fan. His favorite football teams were the Carolina Panthers and the Green Bay Packers. He would spend countless Sundays watching the football games and races with his dad.

DeMarco’s greatest passion was his car, 2009 Infiniti G37, which he ultimately lost his life in. DeMarco would always make sure his car was nice and clean no matter what the weather conditions were, especially when he and his baby sister were going to ride out. He took so much pride in his car; all of his service advisors admired how such a young man knew so much about his car.

DeMarco will forever be remembered by his beautiful smile, humble personality and most importantly his love he has for all of his family.

DeMarco’s loved ones who preceded him in death are his grandfathers Thomas L. Cathcart and George Oliver Jr; great-grandfathers Fred L. Cathcart and Charles Foman; great-grandmothers Lizzie Ratchford and Josephine Foman; and great-uncle Ricky Ratchford.

He is survived by his parents Thomas and Angela Cathcart; sister Alexis Cathcart; half-brother Thomas T. Cathcart of San Diego, CA; grandmothers Phyllis Cathcart of Rock Hill, SC and Juanita Oliver of Charlotte, NC; aunts Liz Cathcart of Rock Hill, SC and Jennifer Oliver (Oneal) of Hampton, GA; special uncle Eric “Jeff” Oliver (Denise) of Charlotte, NC; special cousin (who was like an uncle) Alvin Foman (Shirley) Goose Creek, SC; great-aunts Charlene Foman of Charlotte, NC, Jackie Gunter (Dwight) of Charlotte, NC, Barbara McKenzie of Southfield, MI, Addie Lowery of Rock Hill, SC, Pat Hefney of Rock Hill, SC, Sandra “Elaine” Oborokumo of Rock Hill, SC, and Cynthia Smith (Nelson) of Jonesville, SC; great-uncle Dennis Ratchford of Rock Hill, SC; cousins Jhordyn Cathcart of Rock Hill, SC, Crystal Hefney of Rock Hill, SC, Genesis Walcott and Ella Baynes of Hampton, GA; as well as a host of cousins and close friends.
