Ms. Doris Kay Monroe, age 65, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away on Saturday, December 26, 2020. Born April 9, 1955, in Long Island, Virginia, to the late Charlie Thomas and Christine Pugh Monroe, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, Archie and Charlie Monroe. In life, she had an incomparable hunger for knowledge and experience that spanned decades. A proud military veteran, she was honorably discharged from the US Airforce with a final rank of E4 pharmacy specialist. Her academic pursuits thereafter included, but were in no way limited to an Associates in Data Processing from Central Virginia Community College (Cum Laude) and an Associates in Arts (Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society). She received a Bachelors in Human Services from Gardner Webb University (4.0 GPA Honors) and a Masters in Financial Fraud with a specialization in Cyber Security (3.9 GPA Honors). As recently as this summer she was considering pursuing her Doctorate, saying, “I always want to be learning something and bettering myself.” A woman before her time, she was a champion of women in STEM, having worked as a pharmacist and computer programmer, and a lifelong advocate for mental health. She enjoyed travel, good food, great company, taking care of all in need, catching a shoe sale, and a nice burgundy lipstick color. She is survived by two children born of a marriage, Sheldon Collins and Candice Collins of Charlotte, NC, as well as one grandchild, Amaya Miller, also of Charlotte—all of whom she carried an immense love and pride for. She is also survived by four siblings, Virginia Monroe of the residence, Gloria Monroe, Julius Monroe, and Julian Monroe; and a sister-in-law, Belinda Monroe. She leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will remember her fondly and miss her dearly. In light of safety measures, a controlled service will be held at Alexander Funeral Home, 1424 Statesville Ave, Charlotte, NC 28206 on January 9, 2021.
