The Life Of Mother Dorothy G. Johnson

Dorothy Lee Givens-Johnson was born June 29, 1941, in Charlotte, North Carolina to the late Abraham and Mildred Givens. Dorothy departed this life on January 25, 2023, at Atrium Health Mercy, in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Dorothy was married to the late James Lee Johnson. Dorothy was a faithful member of Ben Salem Presbyterian Church (USA) in Charlotte, North Carolina. She formerly served as president of the usher board, culinary and women’s missionary board. Dorothy worked for multiple families throughout her life, but after forty four plus years of dedicated service, she retired from the Swetenburg’s. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend to all whom crossed her path.

When Dorothy lived in Cascade, she cooked every Sunday and holidays. We would gather around one another and enjoy family time.  She enjoyed shopping, Dorothy was a classy dresser.  She kept a clean and fancy house.  She loved taking family trips to the beach and going fishing. She loved listening to music, especially Smokey Robinson.

She was preceded in death by her parents Abraham and Mildred Mackey Givens, her husband James Lee Johnson, her grandson Tyrice T. Givens, four sisters, Betty Anne Givens, Catherine Huntley, Bobbie Baker, and Ivy Mae Kearse; and two brothers, Abraham Givens Jr. and Calvin Givens.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories, her daughters: Wanda Hamilton, Gwendolyn McClelland (Charles), James Givens Jr., Timothy Givens (Victoria) all of Charlotte, NC. Sisters: Martha Green, Bonnie Black, Judy Epps, Pamela Givens and Sister-in-law Ethel Anderson all of Charlotte, NC. Grandchildren: Towanda Johns (Arthur), Christopher Givens, Samice Givens (Henry), Timothy Ussery of Alexandria, VA, Jamie Harris, Tiara Harris, Chaquana Hamilton, Chario Givens (Chiquita), Latoya Givens, Chakenia McClelland, Dalisha Reid, followed by twenty-five great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren, all of Charlotte, NC.

Also, with a special love and bond; Eugene Howie, Caldwell Funderburk, Joyce Givens, Shaidae Glover, The Swetenburg Family, The Tate Family, The Ball Family, The Barnhardt Family and Bertha Blakeney. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
