Dorothy Holt Person

d. December 5, 2020

Dorothy "Dot" Holt Person, daughter of Thomas and Maud Whitted Holt, was born and raised in Mebane, NC. Her parents and only sibling, Sterlin M. Holt Sr., preceded her in death; as well as her husband Robert Person Jr. Dot had a love for learning and reading, as she told her family about her early entrance to elementary school, where she followed big brother Sterlin when he started school. She graduated from the prestigious Palmer Memorial Institute preparatory school in Sedalia, NC. She then earned Bachelor's and Masters Degrees from North Carolina Central University. She was honored several years ago, as she became a member of "The Golden Eagle ", a celebration of 50 years since graduation. It was at NC Central University where she met the love of her life, Robert Person Jr. They were married for 49 years at the time of his passing in 1995. Dot's degrees in Library Science were an asset to the Black Community in Charlotte. She brought the books to these residents with the start of the Book Mobile. This allowed students to expand their horizons about the world. A few years later, she and two co-workers opened up the North Branch Library in the University Park community. This promoted unity and eagerness to read and learn as goals were set for a brighter future. She eventually accepted a promotion to head the Reference Department and relocated uptown to the Main Library. After retirement, she continued going to the library to check books out for herself and remain in touch with the staff. This was one of her weekly outings, where she drove herself, up until the age of 93. As an avid bridge player, she and her club met often and had gatherings with other clubs on the West side. Dot and her husband Bob attended Friendship Missionary Baptist Church at the historic 2nd/Brevard St. location, as well as the Beatties Ford Rd. site. They were very involved with the organizations and activities through the years as they raised their two sons. Dorothy is survived by her sons Robert (Ethel) and Leland; three grandchildren—Tamarra Person Lampkin (Michael), Stephen Person, and Corbin Person; four great-grandchildren—Jordan Lampkin, Destiny, Ky'mani, and Kingston Person; two God-grandchildren Amanda and Joshua Scott; a special nephew Sterlin Michael Holt; one sister-in-law Dessie Pearson; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Memorials to honor Dorothy Holt Person can be sent to C.W. Kerry Scholarship Fund at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church: 3400 Beatties Ford Rd., Charlotte, NC, 28216.
