Esther Adcliff Chandler

Our beloved (“Doll”) Esther A. Chandler exchanged time for eternity on the morning of October 11, 2018.  Born in Asheville, NC, in March 1941, she was the third child of Mary and Fred D. Chandler, Sr.  She learned “Jesus Loves Me” and committed familiar Biblical passages to memory at an early age.  That was a requirement in their mother’s home.  She became a member of St. Luke AME Zion Church and participated in all of the youth activities.

Doll attended Livingston Street Elementary School, Hill Street Junior High School, and Stephens Lee High School in Buncombe County.  She moved to Philadelphia, PA during her high school years and was nurtured by her extended family.  There she graduated from Overbrook High School in 1959. She returned to her hometown after the death of her mother in1987. Upon returning to Asheville she reunited with St. Luke AME Zion Church and was an active leader on the finance committee for a number of years.  Doll was employed by Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College and Buncombe County until retirement.

Charlotte was Doll’s last city of residence where she moved to be closer to her family and support system since all had moved away from Asheville.   She united with the Greater House of Life Community Fellowship Church, pastored by her brother.

Doll always had a quick wit and a tongue to match but she will be remembered most for her generous nature by her Asheville friends and the children at Greater House of Life where she distributed goody bags each month.

Left to mourn her demise yet celebrate her life are her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Johnny Carroll of Hampton, Virginia; her brother and sister-in-law, Pastor William W. and Minister Roberta L. Chandler of Charlotte, NC; four nieces; Veronica Foster (Dwight), Michelle Freeman, Angela Grimes (Keith), Wanda Tillman (Taras) three nephews; William Chandler, Jr (Andrena), Johnny Carroll Jr, Ron Chandler Sr. and a host of other relatives and friends
