Obtituary: Eunice Edge Givens Eunice Edge Givens was born on March 17, 1929 to Roy and Rosa Pearl Edge in Winter Park, Florida. She had three siblings, Roy, Jeanne, and Rosalee. She graduated from Hannibal Square Elementary School and from Jones High School in 1946, where she was “Miss Jones High School”. After high school, Eunice enrolled in Florida A & M College, graduating in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. While attending college, she was a member in good standing of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority, Alpha Chapter. Upon graduation from college, she moved to Washington, D.C. and began working first for the Veterans Administration and later with the National Security Agency. It was while working in Washington, D.C. that she met the “love of her life”, Odell Givens, who was completing his dental school studies at Howard University. Odell and Eunice were married in 1952. To that union were born two sons, Michael Odell Givens in 1956 and Stanley Scot Givens in 1960. After the birth of their first son, the Givens family moved from Washington, D.C. to Richmond, IN, where Eunice worked as a librarian at Earlham College. After leaving Earlham College, she worked in her husband’s dental office as office and business manager until her husband’s retirement in 1996. Eunice and Odell then moved to Carmel, IN in 1996, where she stayed until 2007. Eunice moved to Charlotte, NC in late 2007. Eunice was a member of the Richmond Dental Auxiliary, a long-time American Cancer Society volunteer, a member of the American Association of University Women and a Life-Member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People As a child, Eunice was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and sang in the children’s choir and as an adult, Eunice was a member of Light of the World Christian Church in Indianapolis, IN and The Park Ministries in Charlotte, NC. She is survived by her sons Michael (Linda) of Charlotte, NC and Stanley (Martha) of Indianapolis, IN ; by her grandchildren, Nicholas (Zoe) of Raleigh, NC , Leslie (Devin) of Charlotte, NC and Scott of Indianapolis; great-grandchildren Chloe and Dakota, of Charlotte, NC; and by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces , great-nephews and extended family and friends . She was preceded in death by Odell, her husband of 50 years in 2002; by her siblings, Roy, Rosalee, and Jeanne; and by her grandson, Ross. The family will receive friends at Alexander Funeral Home, 1424 Statesville Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28206 on Friday, June 16, 2017 from 12noon until 1pm and the funeral service will begin 1pm. Funeral services will be held at a later date at the Crown Hill Funeral Chapel, 700 West 38th Street, Indianapolis, IN. A memorial service and burial will subsequently be held in Richmond, IN at Earlham Mausoleum and Chapel at a later date.
