Frank Darrell Hazel, age 83, shed his earthly body on Saturday, September 11 th at the Hospice of Union County in Monroe, North Carolina.
Frank was born on December 12, 1938 in Beaufort, North Carolina to mother, Emma Fenderson. Being just a girl, herself, when Frank was born, Emma formed a strong bond with her son that would continue for the rest of her life. In 1958, Frank left home to join the Air Force where he worked on ground, fueling airplanes, but always kept his eyes set on the horizon. Frank exhibited a unique level of ambition and strength, and he drew from those qualities through marriage, raising a family, and earning a degree. Frank worked as quality control manager for Schlitz in Milwaukee, WI, and later for American Can in Winston-Salem, NC where he would retire. During his career, his hard work and leadership earned him a mention in Ebony Magazine in the 70s. Frank knew how to work hard, but also knew how to play. His sense of humor and love of pranks brought smiles to all (except the one on the receiving-end)! Frank had a love for music & friends, even helping to organize a Family Social Club (The HASTJOCA Club) that was enjoyed by many for years. He loved to travel to NYC, taking his grandkids and regaling them with stories about a time gone-by.
Frank’s precious wife, Gwendolyn, preceded him in death after a courageous battle with cancer. She has been missed every day since. Frank is survived by his sons Michael Hazel {Becky} of Boise, ID, Derrell Dixon {Victoria} of Mansfield, TX, Aubrey Hairston {Patricia} of Roanoke, VA, daughter, Sharon (Hazel) Beatty {Anthony} of Waxhaw, NC, his grandchildren Aubree Rae (Hazel) Adams {Robert} & Aaron Michael Hazel of Boise, ID, Desiree Valdes of Lakewood CO, Ashley Beatty of Charlotte, NC, Michael Anthony Beatty of Chicago, IL, Jordan Marie Beatty of Waxhaw, NC, Tyler Dixon of Mansfield, TX, his great grandchildren Alexandria Rae & Archie Haze Adams of Boise, ID. Frank also leaves behind siblings Francis “Toby” Fenderson {Harriet} of Apex, NC, Ray Fenderson {Patricia} of Danville, VA, and Deloris Rhodes {Nick}, of Wilmington, NC, along with additional half-siblings and relatives he grew acquainted with later in life.
