Some people walk into a room and the room changes. George Rhyne was one of those people.

George was born in Gastonia, North Carolina, on July 10, 1947, the son of George Herbert and

Gladys Long Rhyne. From the beginning he was lively and precocious, a boy who never met a

stranger and never ran out of things to say. What some might have called a talkative child was

really a gift taking shape. That easy way with people would carry him through every chapter of

his life.

In those early years he was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, where the foundation was

laid for a faith that would define the rest of his story.

At Lincoln High School in Bessemer City, he found the basketball court, and the court found

him. He was a star, and he graduated in 1966 knowing how to compete and how to belong to a

team.

George carried these and his other qualities to North Carolina A&T State University, a school he

stayed proud of for the rest of his days, where he became a member of Phi Beta Sigma

Fraternity. The bonds he made there stayed with him throughout his life. He graduated with a

Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1970.

George began his career at General Motors in Saginaw, Michigan as an accountant, a job that

put numbers in one hand and automobiles in the other. He definitely fell in love with cars.

Years later, he made that love his own, opening Diamond Finish Car Wash & Lube Center, in

Charlotte, North Carolina, which he owned and operated for twenty-five years.

Diamond Finish was more than a business. It was his ministry. George’s business was a corner

of the community, a place where people came for a clean car and stayed for the conversation.

George made sure to know his regular customers by name, and frequently and sincerely wanted

to know how well their families were doing. He chose the name Diamond Finish for the work;

that moniker became synonymous with the quality of the man behind it.

One of the most important moments of his life came in 2002, when he rededicated his life to

Christ.

Everything after that was shaped by his faith. In 2011, he became a Deacon at The Park Church,

where he served faithfully until his health began to decline. He served the way he did everything

else, showing up early, staying late, and looking for the person who needed a hand. He never

missed a revival if he could help it.

If you were looking for George, you had a few good guesses.

He might be in his yard, sleeves up, making something grow. That yard once earned him Yard of

the Month, a distinction he was more than happy to work into conversation. He might be on the

golf course, or at Circle K getting his coffee, or pulling into a friend's driveway with a plate of

food nobody had asked for, and everybody was glad to see.

He might be parked in front of a game, watching LeBron James and telling you exactly what was

wrong with somebody's defense. At Christmas, he would have a cup of eggnog in his hand and a

warm story ready to go.

He loved a good hot dog and a strawberry milkshake. He loved attending Carolina Panthers

games with his daughter, Amy. He loved his church, his city, and the people in front of him.

Those who knew him will remember the electric smile first. Then the energy, the kind that could

make an ordinary Tuesday feel like an occasion. Then the helping, always the helping. If

something needed to be moved, fixed, prayed over, or figured out, George was already on his

way.

George departed this life on July 27, 2026.

He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Amy Rhyne of Charlotte, North Carolina, Daren

Rhyne of Pinehurst, North Carolina; his sisters, Shirley Williams and Gladys Adams (Frank

Adams Jr.), both of Gastonia, North Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, in laws, church

family, and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 8, at The Park Church, 6029 Beatties Ford

Road, Charlotte, NC. Visitation is from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., and the service begins at 11:00 a.m..
