James Willie Brown transitioned to his heavenly home on June 11, 2020. James was born on December 8, 1960 in Hampton, Virginia to Ruby Brown and James Matthews. James matriculated in Newport News City Schools graduating from Warwick High School and he attended both Virginia State University and Norfolk State University. James not only loved God but also loved church and his church family. He grew up as a faithful member of First Baptist Church East End in Newport News, VA. James worked several careers during his life. He was proud of obtaining his CDL Class A license and enjoyed commercial driving. During his years in Charlotte, he was employed by US Foods Service, Greenway Recycling and Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority Event Staff. James relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina with his wife, Kyra, in 2011. Upon moving to Charlotte, they made finding a church home a high priority. The couple quickly made the decision to join The Park Church and James eagerly got involved in several ministry groups including: Sunday School, Bible study and music ministry through the Men’s and the Kingdom Voices Choirs. James had a heart for ministry and was answering the call to begin formal study. He was very proud and honored to have been accepted in his church’s Minister-In-Training program prior to his illness in 2017. James was fun-loving and had a tremendous sense of humor. When you were with James, you were guaranteed to laugh often. Even throughout his illness, his sense of humor never changed. His tough man exterior was a contrast to his genuine concern for people and his desire to be an encourager of others. James was an avid music and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He had a loyal spirit, holding family dear and maintaining lifelong friends. In 2004 James married his match made in heaven, Kyra. James was a faithful, loving and romantic husband who enjoyed taking his wife out to dinner and a movie as well as gospel concerts. James was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby B. Brown, and father, James W. Matthews. James is survived by his wife Kyra (Vaughn) Brown; cousins, Thomas M. Land, Charles R. Mann, Jr., Micheal C. Mann, Donald E. Mann, Crystal Mann Petty, Bettina J. Oliver, Natarsha Oliver Hunter (Don), and a host of other relatives, church family and friends.Memorial services will be held at 11am on Monday, June 22nd at Alexander Funeral Home in Charlotte,North Carolina.
