Mrs. Jo Ann Hughes, 76, of Charlotte, North Carolina was peacefully called Home to Glory at Atrium Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina on Friday, July 1, 2022. Jo Ann Hughes was surrounded by her friends and family. Jo Ann Hughes was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on November 9, 1945. Jo Ann Hughes was the daughter of the late Willie Hughes and Ruth Hughes. In addition to her parents, Jo Ann Hughes was preceded in death by her four sisters, Mary Helen Francis, Ella Mae Hughes, Kathy Ann Hughes, and Marie Hughes Nicholson; two brothers, Willie Hughes Jr., and John Hughes; and her son Robert Virgil Hughes. Jo Ann Hughes was raised in Forest City, North Carolina and she graduated from Forest City’s Dunbar K-12 School and attended Central Piedmont Community College School of Cosmetology. Jo Ann Hughes retired from the Hospitality Industry in Charlotte, North Carolina. If you had the opportunity to meet Jo Ann Hughes, you met a true friend. Affectionately known to her childhood friends and family members as “Coota”, Jo Ann Hughes spent a lifetime raising her sons, her grandchildren, and the children who lived in the Lakeview and Belvedere Holmes communities. Jo Ann Hughes’ passions in life were studying the bible and praising the Lord. Jo Ann Hughes enjoyed listening to music, dancing, and talking on the telephone to her friends. Jo Ann Hughes leaves to cherish precious memories of her earthly life to her aunt, Mildred Ross of Charlotte, North Carolina; sister, Nell Lynch of Morganton, North Carolina; brother, Terry Lee Hughes of Elmira, New York; two sons, Ray Stephan Hughes (Muriel) and Joseph La-Prell Hughes (Shenaa) of Charlotte, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Virgil Lamont Hughes, Ashley Nicole Mitchell, Najalah Arve La-Prell Hughes, Marae Symone Hughes of Charlotte, North Carolina; three great-grandchildren, Ethan Lawrence, Emerson Lawrence, and Markel Hughes of Charlotte, North Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Special thanks to Jo Ann Hughes’ friends who impacted her life in a special way. Jo Ann Hughes lived a long and full life. She was able to depart this life with her full strength of mind, body, and spirit. Although the ones she left behind will forever miss her love, generosity, wisdom, comfort, faithfulness, and her beautiful smile, she will now and forever rest in peace…..
