Miss Johnnie Mae Cannon, a radiant soul whose life was marked by intelligence, creativity, and unwavering devotion to her community, departed this life on September 10, 2025, at the age of 91.She was born in Newberry, South Carolina, on August 17, 1934, to the late Johnnie H. and Sadie P. Cannon.
Johnnie Mae was raised in a home that valued family, education, hard work, and faith. Her family later moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where they settled in the historic Brooklyn neighborhood - a place that planted and nurtured lifelong friendships and deep family ties.
The family joined Bethel AME Church (now Greater Bethel AME Church).A proud graduate of Second Ward High School(1952), Johnnie Mae was valedictorian of her class. Her brilliance was matched by her industrious nature. She loved reading, writing, conducting research, and solving puzzles. Her creativity bloomed in many forms—from playing the piano and organ to tending her garden, and baking delicious treats. Johnnie Mae was a trailblazer. She began her professional journey at Honeywell as an accountant. Johnnie Mae was one of the first ten African American women to work in the company’s accounting department.
She later found her calling at the United States Postal Service, where she served with pride and dedication for 25 years before retiring.She was preceded in death by her beloved parents,Johnnie H. and Sadie P. Cannon, sister Gladys C. Thompson, and nephew John H. Thompson.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted niece, Tamara O. Thompson; family in-love, Frederick Goodman (Brenda) and Roxie Goodman; treasured Godchildren, Barbara Phillips and family, D.J. Strong, and L. Shante Phillips; along with many special loved ones, dear friends, and neighbors who were touched by her kindness and grace.Johnnie Mae Cannon will be remembered not only for her intellect and talents but for the warmth she radiated and the lives she uplifted. Her legacy is one of wisdom, love, service, and quiet strength. She was a humble spirit with a mighty presence.
