Johnny Alexander

September 19, 1943 — January 9, 2019

A Life Remembered A golden heart stopped beating on Wednesday, January 9, 2019.  Johnny Franklin Alexander transitioned peacefully at Levine Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, North Carolina with his loving and devoted wife by his side.  He is now in his eternal home with his Lord and Savior. Johnny was born on September 19, 1943 to his mother, Mary Lou Alexander, and father, Sam Whitley.  At an early age he joined Huntersville United Presbyterian Church, now known as New Friendship Presbyterian Church.  He was an active member while there.  Early in his academic life, Johnny studied at Boggs Academy in Keysville, Georgia, a Presbyterian College Preparatory Academy for African-American students.  He graduated in the Class of 1963 from Torrence Lytle High School in Huntersville, NC.  Johnny did further studies at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte.  Johnny was employed at Southeastern Freightlines for over twenty years as a delivery driver.  He then went on to work for the Cypress of Charlotte as a maintenance &  transportation driver. He worked there for almost thirteen years before retiring in 2016.  A few months after his retirement, Johnny began working as a part-time driver for Enterprise Holding Corporation until his health declined. Johnny and his wife loved to travel and often visited many cities throughout the United States.  They enjoyed  annual cruises including one to Alaska.  In his spare time, he enjoyed shooting pool, woodworking, taking photos with his camera and making many photo albums.  His mother-in-law, Irene Christian, inspired him to start a vegetable garden and he embraced that idea with great enthusiasm as he planted a garden yearly and shared with friends and relatives the vegetables he grew in his garden. As an adult, Johnny joined St. Paul Baptist Church and for over forty years he served faithfully in different ministries.   He served as a member of the Finance Ministry, Transportation Ministry, Broadcast Ministry, the Spiritual Choir, the Mass Choir, the Male Chorus, the Men’s Fellowship Ministry and most recently as a member of the Hospitality Ministry.  He thoroughly enjoyed helping others as evidenced by his volunteer spirit.  Johnny was predeceased in death by his parents, and stepmother Mrs. Maggie Whitley; a sister, Vivian Davis; two brothers, Samuel Whitley, Jr. and William Whitley; brother-in-law, Dino White.  Johnny is survived by his loving wife, Linda White Alexander, of the home; three sons, Rochelle “Rock” Alexander, Charlotte; Brandon Alexander (Christina), Harrisburg, PA; Spec.
