Mr. Joseph “Joe” Marvin Powell, the son of the late Noah Powell, Jr. and Ruthie Mae Jackson,was born October 2, 1949, in Kinston, North Carolina. He departed this life on Friday, April 24,2020 at his home. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Bonnie
Louise Hill.Joe graduated from Adkin Senior High School, Kinston, North Carolina, where he excelled in basketball and earned a four year basketball scholarship to Barber Scotia College. He graduated in 1973 with a B. A. Degree in Sociology and did further study at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and North Carolina State University pursuing a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling. On April 20, 1974, Joe and his college sweetheart, Carolyn Pryor, were united in holy matrimony, and they moved to Charlotte to begin their professional careers.

For fourteen years, Joe worked as an Adult Probation and Parole Officer with the NC Department of Corrections. He retired after being employed for twenty-five years with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office as a sheriff. In his spare time, he also enjoyed working as a basketball official for CIAA games and volunteered with a mentoring program at Piedmont Open Middle School. He was an active member of the Barber Scotia National Alumni Association and Groove Phi Grove Social Fellowship, Incorporated.Joe was a devoted and faithful member of Little Rock A.M.E. Zion Church. He loved his pastor,his church, and his church family. This love was made visible through his church commitment and actions. He dedicated his time to serving on the Steward Board, Men’s Choir, Parking and Security Ministry, Men’s Boosters Ministry, and serving as a Class Leader. Not only did he have love and dedication for his church, but he also exhibited great love for his lodge. His lodge leadership and affiliations included the following:

Joe will be remembered as a loving and supportive husband, a loyal friend, and a friend to all. He will be missed.
Those cherishing fond and loving memories include his devoted and loving wife of forty-six years, Carolyn; four sisters, Joyce Ann Chalmers of Washington, DC, Cordelia Baker, Carol Powell, and Patricia Powell of Kinston, NC; four brothers, Kevin Craddle of Kinston, NC, Noah
Powell, Jr. and Donald Powell of Durham, NC, and James Powell of Greensboro, NC; an aunt,Melvin Powell of Kinston, NC; a goddaughter, Kelley Eaves-Boykin, Charlotte, NC; a host of special nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Joseph M. Powell requested that donations be made to Barber-Scotia College, 145 Cabarrus Avenue Concord, NC 28025, in honor of his wife, Mrs. Carolyn Pryor Powell. Please make checks payable to Barber-Scotia College and addressed to "Class of 1970" on the memo line . Thank you for your generous contribution.
