Juan D Schumann Sr.

January 12, 1953 — March 20, 2024

Juan Demorrow (De Mara) Schumann, Sr., affectionately known as "Johnny," passed away suddenly on Wednesday, March 20th, at his home in Charlotte, NC, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 71 years old.

Johnny was born on January 12th, 1953, in Plainfield, NJ, to Lucille (Teenie) and John (Brudy) Schumann, both of whom preceded him in death. His childhood was spent between Plainfield, NJ, with his parents, and Florence, NJ, with his Aunt Allie and Uncle Jim Logan, both of whom also preceded him in death.

At the age of 18, Johnny fulfilled his dream of joining the military by enlisting in the US Army immediately after graduating from Plainfield, NJ, High School. He completed basic training in Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC, and served in Hawaii during the Vietnam War, specializing as a medical corpsman/combat medic. Johnny's bravery and skills earned him recognition, including membership in the Army traveling Boxing team and receiving the National Defense Service Medal.

After leaving the Army, Johnny pursued various occupations, including community organizing, gold refining, and working in wholesale automotive businesses. Despite facing service-connected medical challenges that rendered him disabled, Johnny remained resilient and adaptable.

A Trivia Buff with an encyclopedic knowledge of music and a penchant for Jeopardy questions, Johnny was known for his humor and ability to bring laughter to any gathering. He embraced his role as the neighborhood ambassador, fondly referred to as Mr. John Alexander, and enjoyed engaging with neighbors in his garage while sharing stories and laughter.

In 1993, Johnny met his soulmate and best friend, Sharon, in Plainfield, NJ, eventually marrying her in 2014 in Charlotte, NC. He was a devoted husband and father, willing to relocate to support Sharon and their blended family, which included Daniel and Jaiden, whom he cherished deeply. Johnny's love for his family was evident in his daily expressions of gratitude and affection towards Sharon and his children.

On March 20, 2024, Johnny peacefully passed away, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of love. He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Alexander; five sons, Dammien Alexander, Juan D. Schumann Jr., Antuan Mayes, Daniel Alexander, and Jaiden Alexander; a devoted brother, Darryl Schumann (Jean); brothers-in-law Allan Alexander (Sandra), Warren Lumpkin Jr., Michael Lumpkin; sisters-in-law Lydia Majette (Ricky), Beatrice Anderson, Rev. Patricia McNatt (James), Wanda Lumpkin, Barbara Morgan (Kenny); Aunt Katherine Alexander; four grandchildren, Zakia (Kia), Zakhai, Zariya Patron, CreMarr; two great-grandchildren Teona and Lake; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, Buddies, Homeboys, Alley Boys and friends. Special shout-out to Alexis who was like a daughter to Johnny and her children Jordan Jamaad and Jamaani Abdul.

Johnny will be remembered for his unwavering love, laughter, and dedication to his family and community. His legacy of kindness and resilience will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
