Latanya Pradd Gidney

October 12, 1949 — November 30, 2017

LaTanya Pradd Gidney, a long-time resident of the Charlotte area, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 30, 2017, with her family by her side.  She was born in 1949 in Washington, DC to Edward and Elizabeth Pradd.  LaTanya graduated from Johnson C. Smith University, where she met her soulmate Herbert (“Mr. G”) Gidney, Jr., whom she married in 1973.  She also earned a Master’s degree in education from Appalachian State University.  She taught children of all ages for over 25 years in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS).  She was an excellent teacher with a wonderful knack for connecting with and nurturing children.   During her tenure, LaTanya’s classroom became a model for CMS’ Math Their Way program.  She trained teachers in CMS and other school systems across the country how to help young children develop a better understanding of mathematics.  She was visiting professor at the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg. LaTanya was an active member of Simpson Gillespie United Methodist Church, where she made a joyful noise in the handbell choir.  She was a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and AARP.  A beloved wife, mom, Nana and friend, LaTanya truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; chatting with friends and family, knitting and spending time with her grandsons.  LaTanya’s infectious laugh could brighten even the darkest days.  She is predeceased by her parents, Edward and Elizabeth Pradd, and her beloved daughter Toyana Gidney.  She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Herbert Gidney, Jr.; son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Jessica; grandsons, Kahri and Edward (“EJ”); nephews, nieces, cousins and many, many friends.  Friends, family and others whose lives LaTanya touched are invited to her visitation and funeral at 11:00 on Monday, December 4 at Simpson Gillespie United Methodist Church, 3545 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte.  Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte.  Arrangements are by Alexander Funeral Home.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Bethlehem Center of Charlotte.
