A rare gems heart stopped beating on Wednesday, (May 16,2019). Leroy Collinstransitioned peacefully at Levine & Dickson Hospice House (Aldergate) Charlotte, NCafter a brief courageous battle with liver cancer. Leroy was born April 13, 1944 in Shelby, Mississippi to his mother, Katerna Collins, andfather, James Christmas. He attended schools in Charlotte Mecklenburg SchoolSystem. He joined Saint Paul Baptist Church and was baptized in 2009 under theleadership of Dr. Gregory K. Moss Sr. He was an active faithful member and committedwhile there. He joined the Men's Sunday School Class where he enjoyed studying theword and praying . Leroy worked various jobs in the city of Charlotte, and was employed for thirteen yearsat Sealtest Dairy (Kraft General Foods) in Charlotte. He then went to work at HuttigSash & Door for ten years. The final stop was at Alexander Graham Middle School(A.G.) where he was a hardworking and devoted custodian. At A.G., he was loved bythe staff and respected by the students. He worked there for twelve years beforerecently retiring in 2017. During his spare time he enjoyed watching Dateline, 20/20, Law & Order, watchinganything Motown and listening to Gospel music. He had an amazing talent for paintingand decorating furniture pieces. He was a wonderful conversationalist, he never met astranger. He was an amazing tailor, and cook, and Leroy loved to travel and oftenvisited New Orleans with his brothers-in-law (Jerome and Tommy) where he wouldwatch the Bayou Classics and Grambling Football games for several years. He traveledto Las Vegas, New York, Chicago, Texas and Georgia. His favorite past time wasspending time with family on Sundays and holidays, eating a delicious meal preparedespecially for him by Jerome. Leroy is survived by his loving sister Elizabeth Pendergrass (Jerome) of Charlotte, NC;his favorite nephews Jamaal and Daren Pendergrass of Charlotte, NC; his adorablenieces Dr. Jasmine Pendergrass of Houston, TX; and Anjelica Pendergrass ofCharlotte, NC; two brothers-in-law Tommy Taylor (Jacquelynia) of Sacramento,California and Walter Taylor (Phyllis) of Charlotte, NC; one sister-in-law DeloresPendergrass Currence of Winston Salem, NC; one cousin Alma Bolden (Charles)Memphis, Tennessee; and adopted Godson Christian Andrews. His extended familymembers are Gladys Barksdale, William Barksdale (Elizabeth), and Joan Barksdale. Ahost of other special friends and co-workers. Leroy will be forever remembered for his caring heart, contagious smile, lovingembrace and unconditional love. He will be missed by family and countless friends. Hewas humble, grateful and he loved the Lord!Special thanks to Levine & Dickson Hospice House (Aldergate) for the extraordinary care given to Leroy during hisbrief stay there.(Family request green plants)
