The Obituary
A Life Well Lived
Lucille L. Charles lovingly known as “Nana”, 96 years old departed this life on Friday, May 6, 2016 at Levine and Dickson Hospice House, Huntersville, North Carolina. Her strong will to live and unwavering faith in God carried her through this life.
Lucille was born on November 21, 1919 in Tarboro, North Carolina to the late Blutcher and Amy Lawrence. She was the oldest child of seven.
She attended the public school system of Edgecombe County. She later met Willie Charles and they were married on September 14, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York where they began their life together.
Lucille worked as a housekeeper and provided childcare. She worked along with her husband as a bookkeeper and gas attendant for their family owned business (Lincoln Service Station). She also worked in the garment district and retired from there after many years of service.
She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church up to her passing. She loved to cook and had many requests for her cole slaw. Those that knew her, knew she loved to eat as well.
Lucille had a wonderful smile that would light up a room. She never showed anger and was known for her ease in frequent conversation with even total strangers. Throughout her life she maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many. Her signature gift of joy, shown through her constant smiling and laughter will never be forgotten. Possessing a true servants heart, Lucille faithfully cared for family and friends. She always believed in keeping God first.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Willie, her parents, her sisters, Mary and Bernice, her brothers, Wilbert Lee and Robert known as “Lou Buddy” and one great grandson, Montel Alonzo Bullock.
She leaves to cherish her memories: one daughter, Dorothy Dennice Lawrence of Charlotte, North Carolina; one granddaughter, Lynnise Lawrence-Bullock (Robert) of Charlotte, North Carolina; three great grandsons, Michael, Armane and Kyle all of Charlotte, North Carolina; one great granddaughter, Ashley of Charlotte, North Carolina; two great great grandchildren, Aubrey and Montel, Jr.; sister, Anna Johnson of Douglasville, Georgia; four step grandchildren, Leroy, Vanessa, Monik and Omar; and a host of nieces, nephews, other close relatives and friends.

“My Nana”
A good heart has stopped beating.
A good soul ascended to heaven.
I will pray for you as you have always prayed for me.
I will never forget you or the image
of your gentle and bright face.
Although it’s difficult today
to see beyond the sorrow,
may looking back in memory
help comfort me tomorrow.
Remembering your wonderful
and gentle soul will forever remain in my heart. “Nana”, you were truly a blessing in my life.
A perfect example of what goodness
and humbleness is all about.
You will hurt no more.
May your soul rest in peace.
~ Love Lynnise “Lynn”
