Lyn Yvonne Lawrence

Lyn Yvonne Lawrence was a beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend. She passed away peacefully on August 18, 2020, in Waxhaw, North Carolina after a valiant struggle with pancreatic cancer. She has gracefully entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born in St. Ann, Jamaica on January 13, 1947, to Gerald Helwig and Leah (Campbell) Helwig. She was one of thirteen siblings. In the mid-1970’s she immigrated to Brooklyn, New York where she met and married her husband Oscar. She became a licensed cosmetologist and subsequently opened her own beauty salon in Brooklyn. Fashion was her passion, always making a statement with her African designed clothing. Upon retiring from the cosmetology profession she founded a new vocation- specializing in-home care for the geriatric population. All the families she served loved her so much that they walked with her during her season of need with frequent prayers and phone calls. For all who knew her, they had certainly experienced her kindness, compassion, humility, and hospitality. The family was extremely important to her and she expressed her love through cooking and baking. No-one ever went hungry in her kitchen and there was always leftover for any guest who perchance had dropped in. She knitted countless baby blankets for all her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her specialty was her crocheted bed coverings. Her firm foundation was her faith in God. Her faithfulness was exemplified by her active participation in the life and work of her church. Her favorite book is the Bible and I do not know of anyone who has read through the Bible as many times as she did. She found her comfort in the Psalms. She is survived by her long time confidante, friend, and spouse: Oscar Her three sons: George, Hugh, and Richard Her siblings: Hugh, Sheila, Shirley, Doreen, Gordon, Desmond, and Retta. Her grandchildren: Krystal, Jahmaal, Samantha, Jordelyn, Brian, Monet, Dominique, Hughlyn, Jahden, and Jayce.Her great-grandchildren: Issiah, Isabella, Kalieyah, Nevaeh, Keniyah, Masiah, Christopher, Qmari, Tejah. She was preceded in death by her parents: Gerald and Leah Helwig Her siblings: Lisa, Lloyd, Madge, George, and Fritz Her grandson: Kristopher She leaves behind many nieces and nephews and friends whose lives she touched in her own special way. She was a doting mother to her sons, a devoted matriarch to her family and a dear friend and confidante to all of her sisters in Christ. To honor her life, a funeral service will be held at the Alexander Funeral Home Chapel in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday, August 29 at 11:00 am. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am. Her interment service will take place in Inverness, St Ann JWI at the family plot. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the First United Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic Church Pantry. This work of providing food for those who are hungry is near and dear to her heart. “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” (Matthew25:40)
