Maggie J. Mccauley

Mrs. Maggie Jane McCauley, daughter of Mary and Josh Hemphill, Sr., was born August 2, 1923, in Van Wyck, SC. She departed this life on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, at Hospice Care in Rock Hill, SC. Mrs. McCauley attended York County Schools and attended Flint Hill Baptist Church in Rock Hill, SC. She relocated to Charlotte, NC, in 1946. She went on to become the first female Head Custodian for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, paving the way for other females with a similar path. She also fed the first black kids of Myers Park High School when desegregation began in the early 1970s. She was highly respected and valued as a critical part of the Staff there. She made her presence known and made Charlotte Observer headlines for her dedication to her duties before retiring from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System in 1990. She received many accolades throughout her tenure. Years prior to retiring from the school system, she became one of the Founding Members of First Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC, in October 1974, where she served for many years as a Deaconess, a member of the Gospel Choir, the Hospitality Committee, and the Host Committee. She was a Floor Leader on the Usher Board and was later recognized as an Honorary Usher for Life. She was also a member of the Eastern Star Sisters of Deborah Chapter No. 424 since 1966. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Samuel McCauley, Jr.; her daughter, Willie Francis Faulkner; her son, Gregory McCauley; her sisters, Johnnie Mae Dye, Irene Anderson, Edna Mae Jones, and Alberta Wright; her brothers, Laurie Hemphill and Josh Hemphill, Jr.; and three grandchildren. She is survived by a special niece, Ms. Cureston Brice of Fayetteville, NC; two godsons, Richard White of Gastonia, NC, and Ronald Anderson of Charlotte, NC; two granddaughters, Janice and Tara Faulkner of California; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
