Mamie was born June 19, 1943 in Fort Lawn, South Carolina. She attended South
Carolina schools, graduating from Finley High School in 1960. Mamie earned a Bachelor of Arts
Degree at Barber-Scotia College, graduating in 1964. She entered post graduate studies at
South Carolina State University, where she completed the requirements for a Masters Degree in
the field of education.
Mamie began her teaching career in South Carolina elementary schools. Then in 1970,
she began over three decades of service in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). Though she
served in a few other positions in CMS, she began her career and ended it teaching
kindergarten.
Mamie joined her mother and other family members at New Zion Missionary Baptist
Church (NZMBC) where she met her husband, Eugene. They were married May 6, 1995.
Mamie used her gift of teaching to advance the Kingdom of God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Stephen Stowe; her maternal
grandparents, Viola and Jim Thorns and her paternal grandparents, Paul and Flossie Howze;
her mother and stepfather, Jamie and Sam D. Simpson, Sr.; her father, Romeo Howze, Sr.; her
brothers, James Robinson, Sam Simpson, Jr., Steven Simpson, and Richard Howze; her
sisters, Betty Thorn and Aretta Simpson; and aunts of the home, Shelly Jeter and Diane
Cooper.
Mamie is survived by her sisters Carolyn Simpson, Doris S. Clowney, Mary S. Singleton
(Spencer), Patricia Howze, Paulette Howze, and Rachel Howze; her brothers Bradshaw
Simpson (Lynn), Richard Simpson (Kim), Dwight Simpson, Vernon Simpson (Barbara), Romeo
Howze, Jr. (Deborah), and Michael Howze; and her uncle and cousin of the home, Leroy Thorns
(Peggy) and Charles Thorns (Lisa). Mamie had a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and two
elder aunts, Beatrice and Susie.
