Marcel was a 1977 graduate of Jacksonville Senior High School. He was very athletic and played baseball for several years. While in high school and after graduation he worked at Fisherman’s Wharf in Jacksonville for a number of years before moving to Waterbury, CT. While in Waterbury he met his wife Sharon B. Sparkman and her one year-old son Shawayne. To this union was a daughter Shatoya and a son Marcel, Jr. From very early on in life Marcel was always a leader; he demonstrated that in his work ethnics and as the head of his family. He was a very proud husband, father and grandfather. Wanting the very best opportunity for his family he relocated the family to Charlotte, NC in the summer of 1989.
He was employed at TJ Maxx for over 30 years and at the time of his passing, he was a very dedicated store manager. Even though he was working full-time at TJ Maxx, he was also a part-time butcher at Foodlion for over 12 years. Before starting at Foodlion he worked in the meat department of Harris Teeter for over 10 years. As you can see, Marcel was no stranger to hard work. In his free time, he loved football and enjoyed watching his beloved Redskins play. His other pastime was watching western movies, fishing and cooking.
Marcel was predeceased in death by his father, whom he cared for in Charlotte, James E. “Buddy” Thompson; paternal grandparents Charlie and Lucy Thompson and maternal grandparents Isaac Jordan and Lula Hines Jordan.
Marcel is survived by his loving wife Sharon S. Thompson; sons Shawayne Sparkman and Marcel “Beans” Thompson, Jr.; daughter Shatoya Sparkman; grandson Kaleb J. Spears all of Charlotte, NC; his mother Blonnie Buchanan of Jacksonville, NC; brother Roger Thompson (Cathey) of Charlotte, NC; sister Cassandra McKnight of Nashville TN; five aunts McGirtha Hines, Eartha Jordan, Brenda Bobo, Bettie Jordan, Patricia Irving (Ivan) all of Jacksonville; three uncles Amos Jordan and Robert Earl Thompson both of Jacksonville and William Jordan (Velma) of Woodbridge, VA; several sisters in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins & a host of other relatives and friends.
