Obituary

Marion H. Young was born on March 28, 1952, in Brenham, Texas, to Moltie Hartfield Jr.
and Gladys Spriggs-Hartfield. As the fourth of nine children in a large and caring family,
Marion grew up surrounded by love and laughter.
Marion graduated from Brenham High School in 1970, where she discovered her love
for teaching. She followed her dream by studying at Blinn College, driven by a passion
for helping others learn and grow. Her caring nature and desire to work with young
children guided her.
In August 1972, Marion married her husband of 52 years, Thomas J. Young Sr., and
together they raised three children. Marion was a dedicated mother, balancing the
needs of her family and career aspirations.
Later, Marion and Thomas moved to Houston, Texas, where she began working as a
Long Point Baptist Elementary preschool teacher. Her warm and patient demeanor
made her a beloved teacher to her young students. She had a creative ability to connect
with children, fostering their curiosity and confidence in a nurturing environment.
In 1982, the family returned to Brenham, and in 1987, the Young family relocated to
Charlotte, North Carolina, where Marion continued her career as a preschool teacher for
over 30 years, she worked to create a classroom filled with encouragement, creativity,
and kindness, until her retirement in 2019.
Beyond her work, Marion was a devoted member of Grace Memorial Church, where she
sang in the choir for many years before joining her husband at Friendship Missionary
Baptist Church. She cherished time spent with her grandchildren, playing the keyboard,
and enjoying her favorite gospel songs. Fondly known as “Muddy”, Marion could always
bring joy and laughter to everyone around her. Summers held a special place in her
heart, as she traveled to Texas for the Juneteenth celebration, reuniting with family and
her dear friend, Carol Ann Jackson. Marion leaves behind a legacy of love and
dedication that will forever be cherished by those whose lives she touched.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Moltie Hartfield Jr. and Gladys Spriggs-
