OBITUARY

Catherine was the very definition of a servant’s heart.

Mary Catherine Walker Austin, lovingly known to many simply as “Catherine,” was born on February 11, 1955, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, to the late Claude Walker and Ollie Walker. On Tuesday, June 23, 2026, she peacefully departed this life, leaving behind a legacy of faith, compassion, and unconditional love.

Catherine was the very definition of a servant’s heart. She was a devoted mother, loving daughter, treasured sister, proud grandmother, caring aunt, loyal friend, and a source of comfort to everyone fortunate enough to know her. To know Catherine was to know kindness. She possessed a gentle spirit, an infectious smile, and a quick wit that could brighten even the darkest day. Her laughter was contagious, her wisdom comforting, and her generosity knew no limits.

Family was the center of Catherine’s world. She faithfully cared for her beloved mother until her passing, demonstrating the same selfless love that she extended to everyone around her. She never hesitated to lend a helping hand, offer a listening ear, or provide encouragement when it was needed most. She had a remarkable gift for making people feel seen, welcomed, and deeply loved.

At an early age, Catherine accepted Christ and joined Silver Mount Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as a dedicated member. She later united with Faith Memorial Missionary Baptist Church, continuing her walk of faith and service. She was also a proud member of Ruth Boyer Chapter #669, Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliated, and Ramses Court #78, Daughters of Isis.

She possessed a gentle spirit, an infectious smile, and a quick wit that could brighten even the darkest day.

Catherine leaves to cherish her precious memory her two sons, Jonathan Vance and Sammy Vance; her devoted daughter-in-love, Bianca Payne, whose faithful care and unwavering love brought Catherine comfort throughout her final months; four beloved grandchildren, Chasity Faucett, Adrian Davis, Yuri Vance, and Sevyn Vance, all of Charlotte, North Carolina; two adored great-grandchildren, Heaven and RJ; and her cherished family by love, Cam and Jen Dyer, whom Catherine loved as her own. She was blessed to help raise their children, Luke, Finn, and Ivy Greer, and in return they lovingly cared for her with extraordinary devotion during her final months. She also leaves behind special friend and confident, Jessie Jordon, a host of cousins, extended family members, sisters and brothers of her fraternal organizations, and countless friends whose lives were forever enriched by her love.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Claude Walker and Ollie Walker.

Although our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we rejoice in the gift of Catherine’s life. Her love was steady, her faith was unwavering, and her compassion touched generations. She taught us that family is built not only by blood but by love, sacrifice, and unwavering loyalty. Her laughter will echo in our memories, her wisdom will continue to guide us, and the countless lives she touched will forever stand as her greatest legacy.

Those who loved Catherine know that while her earthly journey has ended, the love she poured into this world never will. It lives on in every life she nurtured, every heart she comforted, and every family she helped build. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
