Mary Virginia Mungo was affectionately known as “Jenny”. She was the oldest daughter of the late Abel Nelums and Mary Francis Watts. She departed this life on Saturday, October 2nd, 2021.
Jenny was born in Cabarrus County, North Carolina on June 6th, 1933. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by two sisters that were very dear to her - Maggie Marie Thompson, and Rosetta Pratt. Also by her step-son John Thomas Caldwell and her grandson Larry Dean Wallace Jr.
She was educated in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, where she attended J.H.Gunn.
She retired after sixteen years of employment with Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church as a Kitchen Supervisor to begin her personal in-home childcare service. Jenny loved children and helped many families with their young ones.
In 1952 she joined in Holy Matrimony, Cleark Mungo, Sr. (deceased). To this union are eight children: Margaret Virginia Nelums, Sylvester Mungo, Teresa Ann Williams (Duran), Cleark Mungo, Jr., Ruth Marie Mungo Sturdivant, James Lamont Mungo, Gloria Mungo Cade, Christine Kimble (Eddie Mack), and Sheri Caudle - bonus daughter. Twelve grandchildren: Sylvia Clyburn, Ebony Clyburn, Tia Clyburn, Mary Jennae Lewis(Deaundary), Cleark Mungo III (Jaren), Ebony Malika Sturdivant, Emily Marie Parker, Antonio Lamont Mungo(Jeronica), Alicia Ra’vonne Cade (Shara), Robert Hezekiah Boyd, and Ryan Christopher Boyd. Seventeen great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. She is dearly loved by her extended
family and friends.
Jenny began her spiritual journey at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church 48 years ago, confessing Christ as her personal Savior and being baptized on November 4th, 1973 by Rev. H.E. Johnson. She faithfully served on the Missionary Board, Usher Board, and the Pastor’s Aid until the decline of her health.
Jenny was known for her excellent childcare, her generosity, her kindness and her cooking. She helped anyone she could, providing for them delicious home cooked meals, ten or fifteen dollars as she could and her unconditional love. She will truly be missed, but never forgotten.
