Maryland B. Carrington

December 9, 1943 — April 22, 2022

Maryland Beatrice Carrington was called home on Friday, April 22, 2022.  Maryland Beatrice Carrington was born December 9, 1943 to (the late) Bennie Porter and Gertrude Harrison Porter in Emporia, Virginia.  Maryland B, as she was known to family, was the eleventh of twelve children among: George, Etta Lou, Willie Floyd, Peter, Bennie, Jr., Gertrude (#1) and Cleophas (all of whom have predeceased her), Carrie, Martin Henry, Frank Junis and Gertrude #2 (she also predeceased her).  When Maryland turned nineteen she married Edward Cornell Carrington and they moved to Brooklyn, New York.  From that union they were the proud parents of three children, Yvonne Carrington-McKoy, Edward Darnell Carrington and Virginia Carrington-Aery who is her youngest daughter.

Maryland accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Clairsville Baptist Church.  Later she transferred her membership to Greater Bethel AME Zion in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Maryland received her GED in New York and also attended college to learn how to type and took extensive accounting classes which created a beautiful career at the Internal Revenue Service for over 15 years. In 1992, she moved with her daughters to Charlotte, North Carolina along with her two best friends Betty Newsam-Ali  and Mary Davis (both best friends are predeceased).  After settling into her new home she started a new career at Carolinas Medical Center as a Unit Secretary for over 20 years. She retired at the age of 71.

Maryland was a very outspoken person and loved talking on the phone for hours with her sister Carrie and her brother Martin, Frank and her two nieces Mona Jones and Joyce-Ann Porter-Graham (predeceased her).  She enjoyed reading the Bible and telling stories of her childhood years, many know you would have probably heard the stories a hundred times over. Another thing she loved to do was spend lots of time with her grandchildren Kayla Jones, Cyre Aery, Aminah and Emmanuel Carrington.  Maryland took pride in assisting with the two grandchildren (Kayla and Cyre)  that lived in Charlotte, North Carolina, as if she was their second mother. She would pick them up from school, help with their homework (and extra work!), teach them about The Bible, and take them to all their extra curricular activities.

In the last two years of Maryland’s life, she had the pleasure of living with her granddaughter Kayla in Raleigh and Charlotte, NC, where she could enjoy family and fun times.   Due to the increase in her need for care, she was moved into a nursing home facility in September 2021.  Her family mourns her passing, but not her life.  For her life brought joy, happiness, a little sassiness and so much love.

Maryland leaves to cherish her precious memories, her devoted children Yvonne, Edward and Virginia.  Her grandchildren Kayla, Cyre, Aminah and Emmanuel.  She also leaves her sister Carrie P. Moore, Martin Porter and Frank Porter and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends who loved her very much.

Maryland is now resting in peace with her Lord and Savior. Although she is gone she will never ever be forgotten.
