Mattie Porter Caldwell 1926-2019Mattie Porter Caldwell was born in Fort Mill, SC. She is the widow of Melvin Caldwell, Jr. Mattie waseducated in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Public SchoolSystem; Barber Scotia College; Johnson C. SmithUniversity and did extended work at Howard University.Mattie retired from the US Postal Service in 1989 andwas one of the first “black” females to be hired by the USPostal Service in Charlotte, NC. She is an active memberof Ebenezer Baptist Church where she serves innumerous capacities. She is Past President of theMissionary Circle, one of the first Women Trustees andpresently serves as the Young Adult Missionary Director.She is a lifetime member of the Woman’s Baptist Homeand Foreign Missionary Convention of North Carolina;Life member of The Woman’s Auxiliary, Lott CareyForeign Missionary Convention; and a member of ChurchWomen United. Mrs. Caldwell has volunteered herservices on many civic boards and organizations. Shehas served as a Hospice Volunteer, Member of the firstMartin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee inCharlotte, 1990 Mother of the Year sponsored by theCharlotte Mecklenburg NAACP, and 1990 North CarolinaMother of the Year sponsored by the State NAACP. Mrs.Caldwell was the second African American to serve asPresident of Charlotte Mecklenburg PTA Council. Sheserved as President of The Black Women’s Caucus for 10years, member of the Black Political Caucus, Lifemember of National Congress of Parents & TeachersAssociation, Life member of Deborah Chapter #424 Orderof Eastern Star – PHA, Volunteers with voter registrationin Clanton Park Community, Life Member of SecondWard High School National Alumni Foundation, Inc.,Grand Worthy Counsellor of Order of Calanthe –Jurisdiction of North Carolina,  She Volunteers with
