Michael J. Gill, Sr.

Gill has left an indelible mark on the lives of many. “Mike”, as he was affectionately known, was called home on Thursday, July 20, 2017.   Mike was the son of the late Mildred Johnson Gill and William B. Gill. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Bryant A. Gill and William B. Gill, Jr. Michael was born on November 25, 1950. He grew up in the close knit community of Brooklyn in Charlotte surrounded by loving family mem-bers. Mike accepted Christ at an early age. He attended Myers Street Elemen-tary School and was crowned the king of Myers Street while he was in the 5th grade. Mike was a proud 1969 graduate of Second Ward High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society, played varsity football and ran track. After graduating in June of 1969, Mike enlisted in the Air Force in July of the same year. He served his country faithfully from 1969 to 1972 in several states, including service in the Vietnam War.   Mike moved back to Charlotte after military service and began working at Charlotte Rehabilitation Hospital, now a part of Carolinas Medical Center. He was also employed by Ortho Carolina and Carolina Bone and Joint for many years, where he perfected his skills. He attended Central Piedmont Community College; Anson-Stanley Community College and Catholic University. He was a Certified Orthopaedic Technologist and an Emergency Medical Technician. He also worked at Johnson & Johnson and 3M as an instructor. He founded Giltech Education Consultants in 1996, where he provided continuous education for or-thopedics. He conducted training at numerous universities, trade shows and conducted seminars throughout the United States.   Mike was a Hall of Fame life member of the Second Ward High School Nation-al Alumni Foundation, as well as a board member. He held numerous positions; most notably, the Chairman of the Scholarship Committee. Mike was also a member of the Second Ward/West Charlotte Men’s Breakfast Club. He held many memberships in professional societies where he served as President and Secretary for many years of the Carolinas Association of Orthopaedic Technolo-gists and the National Association of Orthopaedic Technologists.   Michael J. Gill, Sr. leaves to cherish his memory and to expand the territory of his legacy, his devoted wife, Ann; his children Michael J. Gill, Jr., of Richmond, Virginia, Charlene Alexander of Charlotte and Cameron M. Gill of Lake Worth Florida; brothers, Bernard P. Gill (Vanessa) of Columbia, SC; Leon S. Gill (Lee) of Madison, Alabama; sisters, Diane Gill Pate (Michael), Gwendolyn E. Gill, Vivian Gill Robinson and Patricia D. Gill, all of Charlotte; sister-in-law, Beatrice Gill; grandchildren, Sheena Raley, Tenisha Jones, Keisha Jones, Thamyra Caldwell, Nehemiah Gill; 7 great-grandchildren, and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations in his memory to Second Ward High School Alumni Foundation Scholarship Fund PO Box 16514 Charlotte, NC 28297
