Mildred Barkley

OBITUARY

Mildred Kirkland Barkley, the daughter of Otis and Azilee Kirkland was born in Rock Hill, SC on December 11, 1921. She peacefully departed this life at home in Lake Wylie, SC on Friday, April 13, 2018.

Mildred was educated in the Winston-Salem public schools, and graduated from Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, NC in 1943.  In 1950, she received a Master’s Degree from Columbia University in New York City. She then began her career as a teacher and an administrator in the Baltimore City Public Schools for over 30 years.

Mildred married the late Warren S. Barkley, Sr. in 1956, a union that lasted for over 48 years.

Mildred was a ruling elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, MD before moving to Charlotte, NC in 1989. There, she became a member of C. N. Jenkins Presbyterian Church.

Mildred was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted son, Warren S. Barkley, Jr., daughter-in-law, Lisa Barkley; grandsons, Julian Barkley (Shaneka) and Ryan Barkley, (Fiancee’ Sarah Gullickson); and great-granddaughters, Serenity, Jewel, Juliana and Mia. Mildred also leaves to mourn, one sister, Azilee McKnight and a host of other relatives and friends.
