Life's Journey
A time to be born. Milton Eugene Geter affectionately known as "Gene" was born to the late Francis Geter and Madison Gist on March 7, 1938 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The eldest of seven children of the late Francis Geter.
A time to learn and serve. Gene attended Carver High School in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He joined the US Army in 1954 and served until 1956. After serving in the military he was honorably discharged and moved to Glen Cove, New York. Gene resided in Bayshore, New York for several years where he began a career as a tractor trailer truck driver.
A time to work. Gene received the Million Mile Award in 1987. Gene started his own business in 1991 CDL Driver Services where he employed many family members and friends from North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Texas, Illinois and Alabama.
A time to love. After moving to Charlotte and residing here for several years he met and married Alvine Haynes. Out of this union one son was born.
A time for family. Gene was definitely a no-nonsense type of man that loved to care for his natural, spiritual and community family. His love for them always exemplified not just with his words, but also his actions. He mentored and encouraged others up close and from a distance. Gene and Mom Al loved having their grandchildren with them in the summers and taking them on different field trips to Carowinds and school shopping. He also enjoyed family gatherings and cookouts and traveling. He was the family Photographer!
A time to die. Gene was called home on Sunday, July 18, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Freddy Geter, Charles Geter and Jimmy Geter, one daughter: Brenda Geter, one granddaughter Allysha Brown and two grandsons Devin Goodwin and Jared Geter.
A time to be remembered. Gene was a loving husband, devoted father, compassionate grandfather, caring brother, supportive uncle and trusted friend. He was selfless and enjoyed the simple things in life. He will be missed, but his memory will be forever cherished.
Gene's memory will live on with his beloved wife Alvine, nine children: Corey Geter of the home, Milton "Jay" (Angela) Geter, John Geter of Charlotte, NC, Percy Geter of New York, NY , Eric (LaToyus) Geter of Powders Spring, GA, Robert (Demetria) Geter of Long Island, NY, Eugene (Shakita) Goodwin of Raleigh, NC, LyNette Harris of Virginia Beach, VA, Tameka Irick of Cartersville, GA. Three sisters: Bessie Slater, Betty Jean Geter, Shirley Hossian of Charlotte, NC, two sisters-in-law: Peggy Geter of Hickory, NC and Malvine Slaton of Virginia Beach, VA, one brother-in-law Rev. Dr. Alton Haynes, Jr. of Washington, DC and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
