George Oliver Jr, 78 of Charlotte, NC departed life on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at Novant Hospice after a lengthy battle of cancer. George was born on February 3. 1945, In Monticello, GA.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. George Oliver Sr, and Mrs. Katie Lawrence Oliver. Son William Thomas of Covington, GA. Sisters; Ella B. Oliver Johnson, Anna Cora Oliver Goolsby, Dorothy Mae Oliver Gotel, Nina Oliver Standifier, Catherine Oliver Williams and Eunice Oliver Davis. Brothers: Willie Lee Oliver, Jesse James Oliver, and Freddie Lee Oliver. Survived by one sibling, a sister Georgia Ree Oliver Sands of Monticello, GA.
George graduated in 1964 as Salutatorian from Jasper County High School, Monticello, GA. He later moved to Charlotte, NC to pursue his college education. In 1969, He graduated from Johnson C. Smith University receiving a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. He later did graduate studies at the University of North Carolina AT Charlotte. While attending college, George started working at the United States Postal Service on March 12, 1966. He would later retire after 33 years in October 1999, as a LSM Clerk. George also worked part-time at NCNB (North Carolina National Bank) as a Freight Payment Clerk and Browns Transport as a Dock Worker.
George joined Greater Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Charlotte, NC in 1967.
George had a passion for music, He would be playing his guitar or listening to various Motown artist. He had an enormous selection of albums, forty-five singles, eight tracks etc. His favorite artist was Sam Cooke. He also had a passion for drawing and fishing. He would spend countless weekends fishing with his son Jeff.
He leaves to cherish memories sons; Eric “Jeff” Oliver (Denise) Charlotte, NC; Keith Oliver of Atlanta, GA; Daughters; Angela Cathcart (Thomas) Charlotte, NC; Jennifer Oliver (Oneal) Hampton, GA; and Bridgette Oliver Charlotte, NC; Grandchildren; DeMarco Cathcart, Alexis Cathcart, Zachary Oliver, Niya Oliver, and E’laina Guy Oliver all of Charlotte, NC. Genesis Walcott and Ella Baynes of Hampton, GA; Latoya Thomas of Augusta, GA; William Thomas Jr. of Fayetteville, NC; Roshun Oliver and Jamiya Hall of Gastonia, NC. Six Great-Grandchildren, Thirty-one nieces and thirty-one nephews. Devoted nephew Carey Sands of Monticello, GA. Special brother-in-law Dwight Gunter and close friend Larry Wallace; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
