George Belton "Molasses" Reid was born November 29, 1938 in Charlotte, North Carolina, the second child of Robert Reid and Myrtle Mary “ Maude” Davis Reid Gary. His maternal grandparents were Rebecca Stewart and Daily Stewart. He graduated from West Charlotte High School, where he was an athlete and excelled in football and basketball. His enthusiasm for sports continued throughout his entire life. He attended North Carolina Central University, Carver College, and Central Piedmont Community College, where he studied general education and business. May 6,1959, George married Anna McKnight. From their union was born two sons and a daughter, Reginald Belton Reid, Sharon Reid, and Todd Germaine Reid. They were married for fifty-seven loving years until Anna’s passing on September, 29, 2016.
George’s professional career consisted of thirty years of service to the City of Charlotte as a Code Inspector in the Department of Community Improvement until retirement. He also was a partnering contractor with Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine Associates for over forty years. George had a passion for sports and was an avid golfer. He took pride in being a member of the Charlotte Golfing Seniors Association.
Cherishing his memories are his three children and his granddaughter, Ericka Q. Reid (Bradley). Preceding him in death is his wife, Anna M. Reid; his brothers, Charles L. Davis, Sr. (Alice) and Robert W. “Bobby” Reid, Jr.; and a nephew, Kevin Reid. He is survived by nephews and nieces, Charles L. Davis Jr., Sandra F. Davis-Ross, Marvin R. Davis, K. Robert Davis, and Gary A. Davis. Preceding him in death are aunts, Amanda Elizabeth Stewart, Mamie Stewart Wheeler, and Maggie Stewart. Uncles preceding him in death are Ira Stewart, Lee Stewart, Robert Stewart, and Charles Stewart. Cousins preceding him in death are James “Jimmy” Wheeler, Jr., and Ralph Stewart.
Also preceding him in death are sisters-in-law, Phoebe Anderson (William) and Thomasina Roseboro (Peter); nephew, Gregory McKnight (Lisa); and niece, Jean Sanders. Surviving him include sisters-in-law, Joann Jackson (Eugene), Brenda Gale McKnight, Gwendolyn Mobley (Lester), and Natalie Mitchell Sanders. Nieces and nephews by marriage include T. Michael Roseboro, Adrian Roseboro, Michelle Roseboro Frasier, Rhonda Myles, Pharena Myles Wilson, Randolph Myles, Antoine Anderson, Tony Jackson, Terry Jackson, Ronald McKnight, Angel McKnight Myers, Adiah Mobley, Prisca Mobley, and Aquila Mobley. Cousins by marriage that preceded him in death include, Robert L. Puryear, Jr., John E. Puryear, William A. Puryear, Thomas L. Puryear, Mary Bailey Puryear, Carl D. Puryear, Betty L. Puryear Tillery, and Joann Yarborough Puryear. Cousins by marriage that survive him are Mary “Sue” Littlejohn Goins (Leo), Myra Cherry Sanders, Earl Puryear, Samuel G. Puryear, and Linda Puryear Eaton. George was also preceded in death by David Batie (Gwendolyn) and survived by Charles T. Hodges (Metter), both of them were lifelong friends whom he loved as brothers. He has a host of other relatives and friends who will also cherish his memories.
