Herman Willingham was born on September 30th, 1931 in Point Peter,
Georgia to the late Olivia and John Willingham. He was one of
thirteen children.
He went to school in Oglethorpe County, Georgia and while their he
became affectionately known as “Johntilla” to his family and friends.
In 1955 he joined the National Guard in Fort Dix, New Jersey where
he met and married the late Geraldine Wilcox; from that union they
had three beautiful children.
Later, Herman went to New York where he met and married Dolores
Griffin; from that union they had four beautiful children.
Herman was a hard working and dedicated employee, who worked for
The Charles of the Ritz company for 25 years.
He was a faithful, God fearing an loving man. He was also a sharp
dresser and hilariously funny person. He would always act like he
spoke Spanish and one of his favorite sayings was “ Do you have any
pesos?”
He enjoyed fishing, cooking and telling us stories of how he grew up
in the south.
Herman was a great husband, fantastic friend, good uncle, but most of
all he was an outstanding father. If you look up the following
adjectives: superb, awesome or exceptional in the dictionary his face
would be under each word.
On June 30th, 2023 Herman transitioned from this life to his eternal
home. He is preceded in death by his wife Dolores Willingham, his
son Douglas Willingham and his daughter Debra Willingham.
He leaves to cherish his memory: His sisters Johnnie Bolton and
Franzetta Goolsby, twin sons Andre and Anthony Willingham; his
daughters: Terri and Brenda Willingham and Denise Marshall-Young.
His daughter in-laws Linda and Lyette. His nine grandchildren:
Vanessa Willingham, Christopher Handley, Demitrious Willingham,
Pascale Houanche, Dominique and Asya Porter, Taylor and Tiffany
Willingham and Kenneth Truesdale. Three great grandchildren:
Lenaya, Josiah and Amari along with a host of nieces, nephews and
loving friends.
