Roosevelt Harley, 80, of Charlotte, NC passed away peacefully at home on
Sunday, April 2, 2023.
Roosevelt was born June 23, 1942, in Blackville, South Carolina. He was the
fourth of six children born to Wilmer and Gloria Harley. In 1955, he moved with
his mother and siblings to St. Augustine, Florida.
Roosevelt attended St. Augustine’s public schools, graduating as salutatorian of
his senior class in 1962. He attended Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia
and Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts, where he earned his master’s
degree.
Roosevelt lived a life of service. From 1967-1969, he served in the United States
Army, reaching the rank of E-5. He spent his professional career working for the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the Department of Developmental Services
until his retirement in 2003. Roosevelt also served as an active member of his
church by singing in the choir and serving as the church’s treasurer.
In 1968, Roosevelt married the love of his life, Lois Childers. They had two
children and established their life in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 2016,
Roosevelt and Lois relocated to Charlotte, NC where he and his loving family of
four lived until his passing. One of Roosevelt’s great joys was spending time with
his family. He never met a stranger and everyone who knew him spoke of his
kind and generous soul.
Roosevelt is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lois; daughter Sherry; son Allyn (all
of Charlotte), brother Hardrick (Los Angeles), sister Sarah Mae (Blackville),
sisters-in-law Lottie Childers (Charlotte) and Anne Harley (DeKalb, IL), brother-
in-law Jesse Childers, and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was
predeceased by his parents, Wilmer and Gloria, and brothers John, George, and
Sammie.
