Mr. Waylon Arnold, 71, son of the late Deacon Laurie E. and Callie S. Arnold, was born on January 09,
1952, in Sanford, NC and was the youngest of 10 children. His soul departed this earth, heaven-bound,
early on the morning of May 09, 2023, surrounded by family at Atrium Health CMC Main Hospital in
Charlotte, NC.
He graduated from Lillington High School in 1970 then went on to attend North Carolina Central
University, graduating in 1974 with a Bachelor's in Political Science and a minor in Mathematics. He
continued his education at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and graduated with a Juris
Doctorate Degree in 1977, but never practiced as an attorney after passing the NC bar exam. Instead, he
moved to New Jersey in 1978 after accepting a position working in insurance for Prudential, where he
worked for 13 years.
In 1981, a few years after moving to New Jersey, he met Betty Mumford and they later married on
July 23, 1983; thus, becoming the stepfather to Nicholas Mumford. From this union, they also welcomed
a daughter, Alexis Nicole in 1986.
He eventually returned to North Carolina (Charlotte) in 1997 and continued his work in the insurance
industry working as an insurance adjuster for various companies including: Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna,
and Lash Group before retiring in 2018.
Waylon was a quiet and humble spirit. He was not a man of many words, but will be remembered by
his family, friends, and loved ones as a kind and gentle spirit and a loving and devoted father. He is
preceded in death by his mother, father, and 9 siblings: Toby, Eugene, David, Sandre’, Franklin, Brenda,
Ronald, John, and Stanley as well as his closest friend, Mr. Floyd Drakeford.
He leaves to cherish his memory: a son, Nicholas Dion Mumford of Charlotte, NC; a daughter, Alexis
Nicole Hood (Joseph) of Mt. Holly, NC; five grandchildren, one great grandson, and a host of extended
family and friends.
