Ida “Queen” McCray was born in Charlotte, NC on December 23, 1950
to Alma Odessa McCray and Robert Lee McCray (both deceased). A
lifelong resident of Charlotte, Queen passed away June 28, 2023 after a
prolonged illness. Her heart stopped at 1:11, her mother's birth date. We
find comfort in knowing that her mother's spirit was present when she
transitioned.
Queen attended Second Ward High School and retired from Charlotte
Mecklenburg Schools. Queen loved her family more than anything. She
prayed for us and kept the family connected. She especially treasured
those precious moments spent with her great-grandchildren sitting at her
bedside. Her favorite color was hunter green, and she loved people,
poodles, cooking, and watching television. Her home was a gathering
place of so much love and laughter. She was always sharing her unique
wisdom and insight, often sprinkled with colorful language so you didn't
miss the point. She made sure that we knew that “It costs you to learn.”
Queen was also extremely hilarious—often without intention. Nobody
could make you laugh like Queen. And Queen was petty. If she asked
you to pick up something specific for her, you knew not to bring back a
substitute. We are forever grateful for Queen's life and every memory
that we shared and we know that one day we'll see her again.
Queen leaves to cherish her memories, daughter Robin McCray,
grandchildren Jeremy, Yasmine and Malik, great grandchildren, Zayin,
Zimir and Sa'Ny. She was predeceased by her sisters, Louisa McCray
and Cynthia McCray Sinclair and brother, Johnny McCray. She is also
survived by her brothers Robert McCray, William McCray, Marcus
McCray (Andrea) and her sister Almator McCray, a loving aunt, Mrs.
Geraldine Woods (Los Angeles), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins,
especially her loving niece Sheneka Washington (Greg) and dear friend,
Barbara Woods.
