Phillip Jackson Alston
Phillip Jackson Alston was born on June 30, 1948 to the late James Sterling Alston and
Mary Elizabeth Daniels-Alston in Oxford, NC. Phillip was the youngest of eight
children. He entered into eternal rest on Friday January 27, 2023.
Phillip was raised in a Christian home and at a young age he joined Lewis Chapel
Christian Church. Phillip attended Mary Potter High School in Oxford, NC and
graduated in the class of 1966. Phillip served in the U.S. Army. He fought for his
country in the Vietnam War and received a purple heart.
Phillip moved to Washington D.C. and became a fire fighter in 1971 at Engine #15.
Phillip was promoted to Sergeant in 1990, Lieutenant in 1991 and Captain in 1995.
Phillip worked diligently in the fire department, risking his life everyday, running into
burning buildings. Phillip was a selfless man, always going above and beyond to help
anyone in need. After serving 32 years in the fire department, Phillip retired in 2003.
Phillip married his wife, Judy Mercer, in April 1973 and later had one daughter from
this union.
Phillip later moved to Charlotte, NC in 2003 where he was a member of First Mayfield
Memorial Baptist Church. Phillip originally became a mason at Fairmount Lodge
#92 in Maryland. After moving to charlotte, he was a faithful member of Unique
Lodge #85, Golden Hue#15 O.E.S, PHAand Charlotte Consistory #35.
Phillip enjoyed deep sea fishing, traveling and working in his yard. Phillip stayed busy
as the president of the Mary Potter Alumni Club and visiting sick and shut -in masons.
Phillip leaves to mourn; his wife of 49 years, Judy Alston, one daughter, Kura, one
brother, Eugene Alston, one sister, Lucille Alston-Long, brother in law, James Long,
and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
