Retha Mae Cunningham was born in Aiken, SC September 2, 1914 and transitioned on February 13,2019. She was born to the late Willie B. and Linnie Williams. Retha moved to Charlotte, NC at the age 12, she accepted Christ at a very early age, and she was married to the late Willie "Buddy" Cunningham for 34 years. Retha was a domestic worker, employed at Tanners Restaurant and Radiator Specialist. She was the matriarch of the family, assisted in raising her nieces, nephews, grandsons and great grandsons and was the caregiver for her mother, father and husband. Retha was known by her family and friends as "Sweet Thang", she loved reading the bible, crocheting, gardening, singing cooking and traveling. Rose bushes of all colors were her favorite. Retha lived by example and gave Brenda and Wendell Lewis the committed courage to care for her for many years to her very last moment. Retha had a PhD in life. Retha preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister: Pearlena Worthy Downs, daughter: Ardell Murphy and two grandsons:Kenny and Ricky Murphy. Retha is survived by her devoted daughter Brenda Lewis (Wendell) of Charlotte, NC. Two grandson Terry Norman(Patrina) of Charlotte and Robert M. Patton of Atlanta, GA and a great-great grandson Kwame Jabari Hanif of Sacramento, CA. She is also survived by many nieces and a host of other family and friends. Retha's loving heart and compassionate nature will be missed but will live on in our hearts and minds.
