Bro. Richard Mangum, son of the late James Mangum, Jr., and St. Lucille Lee Mangum, was the eldest son of five children, born on February 5, 1950. He departed this life at Atrium Hospital on Wednesday, February 17, 2021.

Richard was a graduate of Second Ward Senior High School in 1968. He was a member of the ROTC and had a passion for swimming, weight lifting, tennis, and basketball. He played football and baseball for Irwin Avenue Junior High School and Second Ward Senior High School where he was given the nickname "Baby Face." He also played semi-pro baseball with Post 168. One word that would describe Richard is "cool."

Richard's name was placed on the United House of Prayer roll at birth. He played the bass and snare drums for the Concert Band under the leadership of the late Bro. Herman Coleman. He was a member of the Senior Business Board, a Sunday School Teacher, a tithe payer, and G-Class worker.

He was no stranger to hard work. As a young man, he sold the pink final newspaper (Charlotte News), caddied for Myers Park Country Club and Quail Hollow Country Club to name a few, and even worked at the Charlotte City Club after school. Entrepreneurship was something he learned at a young age. He was employed by Superior Barber Shop after graduating from Harris Barber College in Raleigh, NC. He went from an apprentice to a master barber, then opening Mangum's Barber Shop on West Blvd. In 1980, along with his wife Alice Young Mangum and father James Mangum, Jr., they established and opened Mangum's Barber College in Rock Hill, SC. In 1995, it evolved into Styletrends Barber and Hairstyling Academy. He was a licensed barber stylist and instructor. Richard succeeded in owning and operating the first Nationally Accredited Barber School in the state of South Carolina. During their 35 year tenure in the Rock Hill area, many lives were transformed and impacted. Countless entrepreneurs started from there. Over the course of his 35 years of service, he and his wife helped over 1,000 students to graduate. Today, Mangum's Barber Shop remains and has been a staple in the West Blvd. community for over 50 years!

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Hallman; niece, Reanita Bridges; and wife, Alice Young Mangum.

He leaves to cherish his memory: daughter, Charlene McCleod (Graham "Sonny") of Clover, SC; four grand-daughters, Alexia Noel, Kendall Alyce, Cydni Alexandra, and Salenna Michelle, all of Clover, SC; two brothers, Apostle James Mangum, III, and Elder Cedric Mangum, Sr. (GiGi) of Charlotte, NC; two sisters, St. Vermel Harris of Winston-Salem, NC, and Sis Mary M. Evans of Charlotte, NC; two aunts, Martha Logan (Michael) of Fayetteville, NC, and Mildred Mangum of Monroe, NC; five brothers-in-law, Robert Young (Patricia), Samuel Lee Young, Jr., Ross Young (Cindy), James Young (Tina), and Marvin Young; three sisters-in-law, Martha Sifford, Glenda Carithers (Clarence), and Lola Reese (Don); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
