Richard Mitchell, Jr. was born on December 12, 1942, in Charlotte, NC. He was the son of
Richard Mitchell, Sr. and Mary Belle Mitchell. Richard was one of nine children. He had many
gifts and talents. As a youth, he was in the band and played the French horn, drum, trumpet, and
trombone. He often bragged about his ability to dance. He was a basketball player and earned the
nickname “Goose”, because of his basketball skills. As a teenager, he worked as a caddy at a golf
course. He developed a love of golf from his father, who taught him how to play the game. He
excelled as a golfer and spent many Saturdays playing the game. When he was not playing golf,
he was watching it on television.
Education was important to Richard. He graduated from Plateau Price High School. After
graduating, Richard attended barber school. However, cutting hair was not what he was called to
do. He later went to EPCI for computer training. He worked as a computer programmer at
Collins and Aikman, Allstate, IBM, General Electric, and finally he worked at Radiator Specialty
doing electronic data interchange. Richard met the love of his life, Ada Mae Young at a school
dance. At the time, Ada was dating his best friend. He later informed his friend that Ada was
going to be his wife. Ada knew she was in trouble when Richard took her to a golfing range on
their first date. They dated for nine months before getting married on September 12, 1965. He
worked several jobs at one time to provide for his family. Richard and Ada had two girls,
Angela and Alana. On November 8, 1994, his beloved wife went to be with the Lord.
Richard experienced a stroke in 2010. Even though he was paralyzed, he always remained
positive. Throughout his life, Richard was a blessing to many people. He raised his family in a
godly atmosphere. He took care of his elderly family and made sure to provide for his own
family. He was a very giving person. Even though Richard is no longer here, the lessons he
taught, the way he lived his life, and his positive outlook on life will live on through his
offspring. Richard fought a good fight, and he finished his course.
The family is at peace knowing that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. He
is no longer paralyzed but he is walking the streets of gold with his jewel, Ada, and hopefully
playing golf.
Richard went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 31, 2023. He leaves to cherish his fond
memories, daughters, Angela Cornelius (Michael Cornelius) and Alana Tavernier (Alex
Tavernier); brothers, Raymond Mitchell, Kenneth Mitchell, Donald Mitchell, Ronald Mitchell,
and sister Patricia Mitchell; granddaughters, Ariel Cornelius, Ariah Cornelius, Alexis Tavernier,
Ayana Tavernier, and Ariana Tavernier; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
