Robert Lee Cousar, Sr.

December 12, 1937 — January 31, 2023

No one knows God through love alone.
It takes pain and suffering to make us his own.

Mr. Robert Lee Cousar, Sr., son of the late Andrew Cousar and Odessa Montgomery
Cousar, was born December 12, 1937, in Lancaster, South Carolina. He departed this life
on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at his residence in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Robert was educated in the Lancaster County and Charlotte public school systems. He
was a 1957 graduate of Second Ward High School. From an early age, he was raised in
Camp Creek A. M. E. Zion Church in Lancaster and later joined Little Rock A. M. E. Zion
Church after moving to Charlotte. At Little Rock A.M.E. Zion Church, he served on the
Steward Board for 17 years. He was also a very active member of the Men of Varick,
where he served as a mentor to many of the boys who were members of the Sons of
Varick.
In the Barringer Woods community, he served as a political activist and community
leader – often helping to get out the vote during local and national elections.
He served as Scout Master at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church for over 10 years.
There he mentored and taught many young boys from the Clanton Park and Barringer
Woods community.
Robert was a member of the Silver Set Lodge #327 for many years and was awarded
the title of Honorary Past Master. He was also a member of Boss Chapter #3 – Holy Royal
Arch Masons and Joshua Commandry #12 – Knights Templar.
For 26 years, he was a tire builder at General Tire & Rubber Company, and he retired
as a Tire Building Instructor.
In 1961, he was United in Holy Matrimony to Dorothy Beatty, and they enjoyed 61
years of marriage. Robert was a loving and caring husband and father to his wife and all
his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Nathaniel M. Cousar; his brothers:
Andrew Cousar, Jr, Paul Cousar, and Willie Cousar; and his sisters: Louise C. Bufford, Mary
C. Frazier, and Mathalene Cousar.
To mourn his loss are his wife, Dorothy B. Cousar; his sons: Robert L. Cousar, Jr.
(Regina) of Charlotte, NC and Clarence J. Cousar (Jessica) of Green Cove Springs, FL; his
daughters: Iris M. Burke (Kerwin) of Charlotte, NC, Kammey A. Cousar of San Diego, CA,
and Deborah C. Jones (Michael) of Raleigh, NC; his seven grandchildren: Jamilla A. Burke
of Charlotte, NC, Nathaniel C. Cousar of Denver, CO, Catherine L. Jones and Christina C.
Jones of Raleigh, NC, Sherry K. Cousar of Virginia Beach, VA, and William M. Cousar and
Grace A. Cousar of Green Cove Springs, FL; his siblings: Rev. John E. Cousar and Lula C.
Rorie of Charlotte, NC and Rosetta Staten of Richmond, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews,
family and friends.
