Roosevelt “Butch” White, Jr., 68, departed this life peacefully at Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation Center in Statesville, North Carolina, after a long battle with a respiratory illness.
In his early years, Butch was a longtime resident of Gary, West Virginia. He graduated from Gary District High School. He was a member of Mt. Harman Branch Church of God where he served a Deacon under the religious leadership of Benjamin Brogden, Jr. Professionally, he held several public & private sector security positions; including Police Chief for the City of Gary and Security Officer at several U.S. Steel mining properties.
In recent years, Butch relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina where he worked for a private security company at the Piper Glen gated residential community. He became a member of St. Mark AME Zion Church where he served on the Board of Trustees. He also served in the Christian Education Dept. as a Sunday School Teacher. He sang in the Men's Choir and was a part of the Men's Booster Club. He was well liked and respected by many in the community.
Butch had a uniquely playful soul, yet nurturing spirit. He loved encouraging and uplifting young people. He also loved fishing, playing cards, telling jokes and visiting with family & friends. Every Sunday evening, he'd call his sisters just to say hello; and he'd always call loved ones on special holidays & birthdays. Butch would end every telephone conversation with “I love ya’ll”.
He is preceded in death by his parents (Roosevelt White, Sr. and Ophelia Abbington White), his sister (Louise White), his brother (Andrew William White), his first wife (Shirley Johnson-White), and nephew (Roland Roosevelt Washington).
He leaves to cherish his memories sisters, Shirley Vernon of Rocky Mt, VA, Jacqueline Vineyard of Westbury, Long Island, NY and Karen Kay of Lexington Park, MD; his adopted family, Francine & Rico (NC); his nieces, Janice (VA), Denise (MD), Rhonda (MD), Libby (NC), Ruth (NJ), Olivia (NY), Monica (NY), Vickie (NY), Tara (WV); and a host of cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, friends and extended family.
Butch was greatly loved and will truly be missed.
