Sgt. Major (Ret.) Willie Lee Jordan

Sergeant Major (Ret.) Willie Lee Jordan was born to the late Daniel and Nancy Jordan in Chester, South Carolina on May 17, 1937. He was their only son along with his 6 sisters! He departed this earthly life on Friday, September 3, 2021 in the comfort of his home with his family surrounding him.

Willie was educated in the Mecklenburg County School system. He was a graduate of Second Ward High School where he was a football superstar.  He was even offered a full scholarship to Johnson C. Smith University, but instead, he chose to enlist in the United States Army in September 1956. Not long after joining the military he married his sweetheart, Imogene Harper, the love of his life. They were married over 60 years, raising 3 children.

Willie was such a caring husband, father and friend. He genuinely cared about his entire family, all of his friends and the many soldiers that he led both in training and those on the battlefield. He served in the U. S. Army for 30 years.  His tours of duty as an Infantryman (11B) consisted of 17 years at Fort Bragg, 2 tours to Vietnam, Korea, 25 ^th Infantry Division, Hawaii, Washington and Pennsylvania where he was an advisor to a Reserve unit as their operations Sergeant Major.

After his military retirement in September 1986, approximately one year later he was employed with the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier. Later he became a (204B) supervisor because he felt that in this position he could increase the efficiency of mail-out which resulted in the improvement of customer satisfaction.

Willie was one of the most dedicated people that you would ever meet. He was smart, sharp, funny and such a classy dresser. He loved clothes and especially nice quality shoes. No one could shine shoes better than him. It was hard to match wits with him and even harder to compete with his wardrobe.

Willie didn’t have many outside hobbies, but he used to love fishing, attending cookouts and listening to good music.  His favorite artists were Frankie Beverly and Maze and definitely Earth, Wind and Fire!  He would always sing along with the groups, but honestly, he couldn’t sing a lick, but it didn’t stop him from enjoying himself.  We can’t forget that contagious laugh of his.  He could always say something hilarious to make you laugh right along with him.

Willie was a member of Clinton Chapel and was actively involved in the church before he became ill with Alzheimer's.  Even though Willie didn’t say much during these last few years, he did remember to call on our savior by literally uttering the words “O Lord….O Lord” while taking his last breath.

Prior to Willie’s departure, he was preceded in death by his wife Imogene Harper Jordan, his father, Daniel Jordan, his mother, Nancy Jordan and his oldest sister Mary Davis.

Left to cherish Willie’s memories are his two sons: Alphonso Jordan (Regina) and Antonio Jordan, both of Charlotte, NC; one daughter: Pamela D. Jordan also of Charlotte, five grandchildren: Alphonso D. Jordan (Sophia) of Atlanta, GA, Brandon L. Jordan, Daniel M. Jordan, Luther A. Jordan and one granddaughter, Destiny D. Jordan all of Charlotte, NC, four great grandchildren: Aurianna Jordan of Jonesboro, GA, Ah’niyah Jordan of Charlotte, NC,  Nina Jordan of Atlanta, GA and Jha’Kobe Jordan the newest family member also in Charlotte; Six sisters: Joanne Jones (Vernon), Bobbie Thomas, Helen McJunkins, Jackie Nyemb (Louis) all of Charlotte, NC; Betty Little of Greensboro, NC and Alice Steele (Herman), Pembroke Township, IL, a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, Godchildren, other relatives and many “special” friends.
