Thomasena Smith Caldwell was born to Andrew Smith and Marie Wallace Smith on August 24,1933 in Charlotte, N.C.. A native Charlottean she was educated locally from Fairview school to West Charlotte High where she was a proud member of the class of 1951.
After marrying the love of her life, Thomas Milton Caldwell,Jr. and having three children Gwen, Milton, and Marlene she was able to attend Johnson C. Smith obtaining a degree in Elementary Education.
With that degree she began a twenty nine year love of teaching school in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.She began her career at University Park Elementary School and ended it at Ranson Middle School. She retired in June of 1993.
Thomasena loved life and all of the people in hers including her siblings, children, the best grandchildren in life, and the greatest GREAT grandchildren ever born.She had many friends she loved dearly including but not limited to Vivian Hairston, and Lillie Stitt who were friends of over sixty years, Joyce Woodard, and Debbie Blakeney who were sister friends, and Marilyn McClain who kept her included via mail and notes. Thomasena was fortunate to have a primary care physician, Dr. Yvette Beverly-Rudisell(and her team) for over two decades who managed her health care through several severe medical issues enabling her to participate in the life she loved for as long as she was able to.
Predeceased by her parents, her mother-in-law and father-in law Letha and Thomas Caldwell,Sr.,three sisters, two brothers, and her only son, Milton she is survived by her husband, Thomas Milton Caldwell, Jr., her children Gwendolyn Bradford (Bernard), Marlene Caldwell, her sister, Eleanor Horton (Lindsey), brother, William Smith (Carolyn), grandchildren, Bernard Bradford,Jr., Bianca Howard(Wayne), and Harvey Finley, Jr., three great grandchildren, Marissa Bradford, Lio and Lenora Howard,many nieces and nephews as well as a host of other family and friends.
Service will be at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2600 Beatties Ford Road Friday, February 1, 2019 at noon with visitation one hour prior. Anyone wishing to send memorials we would appreciate your considering Memorial Presbyterian Church, or Novant Hospice(whose services led by Melvia Valentine )were of invaluable to Thomasena and her family.
